Whippet Puppy Advice?

SightHoundSunday · 21/10/2024 11:18

Feels bizarre to be typing this but we've got a whippet puppy joining the family later this week.

We already have an adult male greyhound and I've wanted to get him a companion for some time, but we were considering another rescue, rather than a puppy.

For various reasons it has all come about quite suddenly, so I'm still getting my head around the new addition (but very excited!). Currently prepping!

Any puppy survival tips? My lovely friend has one from the same litter and it makes it look easy so I'm hoping to follow suit. 😅

Those Blizzard coats look fab! Big boy needs a new coat too as his waterproof coat has started letting the rain through.

Thanks!!

Oooh… adorable! How much does a whippet pup set you back these days? I rescued a bedlington lurcher years ago- absolutely adored him- and am now owned by an opinionated frenchie cross.

I’d have loved a dog that didn’t get travel sick though. We haven’t cracked that with this one.

We paid £800 for him.

Google says expect to pay between £500-1200.

I had a look but was reluctant to go on the pets4hones type places. I ended up on whippet rescues thinking about fostering. But that’s all a pipe dream as SensibleDog who is anything but prefers to be an only child. We fostered a couple of Rommie dogs but he got most offended!

Honestly, Blizzard are the best... I used to walk miles in all weathers with Blizzard coated dogs , a Lurcher and Whippet, and I'm not kidding, Recent Whippet actually fell in a lake on Christmas Day as a puppy {was running and continued to run on top of the water...... and went right under under the surface...Son pulled her out, and under the blizzard coat {On top of her back} she was DRY!

Pics where you can see her bonce was right under...

Hope yours is quiet tonight... I slept alongside ours in a crate for the first few nights...then she slept on bed. And has done ever since.

I second the recommendation for a blizzard coat. My two have the pink ones and they are awesome!!! Proper warm and waterproof not just water resistant which makes a difference. Brilliant coats. You can afford to go a little bigger as your pup will grow into it because they grow at an alarming rate.

Also check out 'Trendy Whippet' we have their coats and harnesses. Be careful with the harness in case you have a little houdini as some of them they can back out of with them being so skinny!! 😂

Definitely agree with going up a size... My Whippet wears the old {30 + yr old} Lurcher's one sometimes...it's massive, but keeps her warm and dry.

It's probably done 6,000 miles of walks! Been washed countless times.

For Pavement or on lead walks...Newmarket Wool.

Trust me, you don't want to be washing black mud and fox poo out of these. {Have done, though}

Soap flakes hand wash only in cool water make them less practical.

But they look very smart. {Friday Fox}

We survived the first night!

He was an angel. I put him to bed at just after 11pm after a last trip into the garden. He did cry for about 5 mins and then not a peep all night.

I got up just after 6am to get him up and he was awake but just lying quietly. No accidents in the crate!

Of course, I still didn't sleep so well as still I kept waking up and worrying about him. I may have crept downstairs at one point as I was worried I had left the heater on too hot (we have a little oil filled radiator I put on for him as our kitchen gets cold). I woke big dog up in the process (he never usually bothers if we go downstairs in the night for Calpol/whatever) but managed to escape before the puppy noticed me!🙄

What a good boy!!!

My girl {9 weeks squinnied louuuudly when I was lying next to her on the sofa all night {she was in crate} at Night 4 she was the ''worstest''

Squinnying every few hours.

She was rattling the crate door and shrieking - I ignored her 'til she was quiet.

She had come from a house with a lot of Whippets of all ages, so probably missed her sisters and mum.

Maybe your Big Boy was a calming influence? ❤️

Big Boy is OK but I think struggling a bit with the change.

Honestly though? Yesterday was HARD! Little Dog is an absolute delight but it's hard work juggling puppy, kids, and big dog. My five year old never stops talking (made worse by puppy excitement) and I felt very overwhelmed at times yesterday trying to meet everyone's needs.

I feel a bit better today, but I was questioning my life choices yesterday. Although today is a new day and I am feeling positive. Reminding myself we are adjusting and also puppies grow up quickly so enjoy him while he is so teeny!!

We can start pavement walks on Tuesday and I think that will help being able to get puppy out and about gradually. Looking forward to starting proper field walks after final jabs too.

Crate is a godsend, but then I worry about him spending too much time in it so I am trying to find the right balance. Although he seems happy and mostly falls asleep in it. But DH left him in it for nearly an hour yesterday morning while I went for my run and said he cried almost the whole time (husband and kids in another room I think he would have settled it they'd stayed in the room with him a little while before moving away) which I was a bit annoyed about as I want to keep a positive association with it.

He's been doing so well with toileting. The odd accident but vast majority we are getting into the garden, which feels like a positive direction. No wees on the floor in the living room (only carpet the rest is hard floor) which I am calling a win.

Last night was the same as the first night. Cried for a short while then settled. Although he was squeaking first thing this morning but I think the clocks changing threw him. We ended up getting up at 5:45 (my eldest burst into bedroom at 5:30 anyway as with the puppy excitement I forgot to change the kids clocks). No accidents overnight again which I am finding astonishing for such a young pup. Although Big Dog has bowls and bladder like steel, so maybe that's a sighthound trait?!

Oh bless, he's started going into his crate of his own accord today, so that seems like a good sign that he likes it there.

@SightHoundSunday He does look soo gorgeous with Big Boy.

Big Boy of course will feel a little ''hrmph'' at the new arrival- but they appear to be sharing a sofa which is a good sign.

When we had two dogs {Lurcher then a Whippet} Lurcher was really miffed initially, but we just fed her first, and let her through doorways first- and he was so insistent that she would love him, that it eventually happened.

He curled up next to her chest, one day and instead of her moving away with a face like she'd been sucking lemons, she was accepting.

There used to be a urine destroyer solution we used for odd puppy accidents I jokingly called it ''Urine trouble!'' {of course they weren't- just a bad pun} but it left floors clear of any taint.

From pet shops or online.

some crying is rot be expected in early days- he's been ripped from the only dog family he has known, and it takes a while to get fully settled where he feels at one with the routines at yours.

The clocks going back can definitely make a difference to routines. {Although he's only been at yours a couple of nights, so probably won't make too much difference.

I’m very envious!

Whippet pups feel the cold. You can make a little jumper for yours by cutting part of the arm off an old (human) jumper and snipping some front leg holes in it- this fitted our pup much better than any coats we bought.

This was literally the best advice, thank you. It worked perfectly!!

When they are pups they have bodies like little tubes-
So a stretchy woolly sleeve would work well

The classic deep chest comes in later.
