Dog reactive after neutering

Our 13 month Border Terrier was neutered just under two weeks ago. Unfortunately he got a scrotal haematoma as a result of the surgery which is improving but still very much there at the moment. He’s still on painkillers.

He’s out and about for walks on the lead again now as advised by the vet but we have noticed he is being much more reactive with other dogs than we was before. Previously there was one French Bulldog he took massive issue with but otherwise would trot past other dogs unbothered and/ or do a bit of bottom sniffing and leave it at that. It’s not been with every dog but the past few days it feels like every second dog he is growling or barking at.

Is this normal? Will it settle down or should we be getting a dog behaviourist involved/ is there anything else we could do? We’re back at the vet for a checkup on Monday so I will ask them too but would be grateful for any experiences.

Good chance itll settle. There is a hormone surge initially. Id get advice now though to make sure you get on top of it. I went through it with mine when he was chemically neutered

That’s interesting to hear. Did your dog improve again after a while then? Did you do anything particular to address the behaviour in the meantime?

It will take 6 months for your dog's hormones to settle

If he's still requiring painkillers, it's possible he's just feeling a bit defensive and wants everyone to stay away.

He certainly isn’t happy for us to touch the haematoma so I assume it is sore

He can still be lead reactive sometimes.

Generally though he is fine now and fully neutered. I was working with a great trainer/behaviourist at the time anyway so had a 1-1 session on a walk re dealing with reactivity.
