Are XL Bullies deserving of their reputation?

I met a bloke, completely randomly in my local Spar. And he had a beautiful Golden pup about 18 months old. And he was sniffing around my ankles and wagging his tail.So bent down to stroke him and pet him. Such a gorgeous little creature. So happy and excited to see me. I thought he was a Staffie but no. XL Bully. I know it's none of my business but I said, he's so sweet. You're not breeding him for dog .fighting are you? No he's not. And I know I was rude. But I just can't see a happy, friendly, gorgeous little puppy being abused.

I babysit my brother's chocolate Labrador two days a week so I am familiar with dogs and not scared of them.

Your post is a bit confusing. Why have you mentioned puppies being abused?

I’m sure the dog was cute. Tiger cubs are cute too. And polar bear cubs. 🤷🏼‍♀️

CocoapuffPuff · 09/10/2024 08:53

How many deaths will it take you? Individually of course, there are bound to be some absolute crackers in the breed. And there are some absolute psychos too. Can you tell which one this pup will grow up to be? Can anyone? It's too unpredictable.

Marblesbackagain · 09/10/2024 08:57

The issue is when they attack loss of life is a possibility. That isn't the same of the Labradors. We have seen loss of life in Ireland in very recent times and children left with life altering injuries. Noone should have a pet out and about that can cause that damage.

I adore dogs and cats, grew up with German shepherds, dobermans, collies, which were the most likely to bite. All great dogs but I had a chance against them if they attacked, I wouldn't have had a chance against an XL, completely different beast .

My son in law worked on a farm. They had a gorgeous new dog about 18 months old. He used to come home raving about it, wanted to buy a puppy when they bred it. Reader, the dog sadly had to be pts after its owner tried to intervene when it went for another dog. The owner lost a finger.

ETA it was a XL Bully of course

I would wonder why of all the breeds/crossbreeds available the man would get a dog that even if it IS lovely will have to be muzzled in public etc.
And did you expect him to say "oh yes, totally breeding him for dog flighting"?

This.
And this: 🤣 to the response!

Yes

TeenToTwenties · 09/10/2024 09:07

I thought registered XL bullies had to be neutered? Where has the pup come from?
(or am I wrong re neutering?)

TaylorSwish · 09/10/2024 09:08

They are huge muscular dogs, genetically predisposed to violence, owned by people who usually don’t train them or follow the law. Of course they deserve their reputation.

impressivelycunty · 09/10/2024 09:08

The dog may be cute now. It may never attack anyone. But if it does, it will be serious and once the dog realises it's good at biting/attacking, it will continue to do so.

Actually I think you are right but depending on the age of this dog (Op says pup but then that it was around 18 months old) there are still some younger ones around.

🤣🤣

crumblingschools · 09/10/2024 09:09

Was it muzzled? Think the ban in breeding came out less than 18 months ago. Of course could depend where OP lives

SabreIsMyFave · 09/10/2024 09:13

Yes of course they are deserving of their reputation! They have killed grown men FGS. (Also women and children, but the point being that they have so much brute force - and strength - that they can take down and kill a grown man.)

They need to be phased out. All XL Bullies need to be neutered. As soon as it's possible to do it.

ATastingMenuButItsAllCrisps · 09/10/2024 09:13

How could it be a little puppy at 18 months old? It must have been at its extra large killing machine size, and should have been muzzled.
Look up the number of fatalities these creatures have caused if you're concerned with their reputation.

PoliticalPossum · 09/10/2024 09:21

I’m confused - he had a puppy in the local Spar? Or he had left the dog tied up outside?

It reads like he let the dog approach you without checking you were happy? Irresponsible.

Either way, they deserve the hate. There’s only one reason people buy dogs like that.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 09/10/2024 09:22

Everything is cute when it's a baby!

SophiaJ8 · 09/10/2024 09:22

but I said, he's so sweet. You're not breeding him for dog .fighting are you? No he's not

Do you think he’d have told you if he was?

Their reputation is justified.

Ylvamoon · 09/10/2024 09:28

They are banned in the uk now, so why have you met a puppy in a supermarket of all places?

Unluckycat1 · 09/10/2024 09:29

Do you mean 18 weeks? I don't think an 18 month old xl bully would be a "little creature".

heathspeedwell · 09/10/2024 09:33

The statistics might be even worse now but last time I checked X bullies made up less than 1% of dogs in the UK but were responsible for around 75% of fatal attacks.

Sadly a high proportion of them have been bred from an extremely violent and unpredictable dog.

We all know that dogs can be bred for different traits. Retrievers retrieve, pointers point. XL Bullies have been bred to be aggressive.

That's outrageous! Shock
