Autumn Winter Tips!

Feelingblue77 · 08/10/2024 07:25

Hello!
I seem to muddle through autumn winter without being organised so this year thought I’d ask for some recommendations! I have an elderly border terrier and we walk twice a day, slowly!!
Any recommendations for:

  1. decent light up collar or other device for her to wear
  2. coat of some sort (not too warm she doesn’t like them much) that doesn’t restrict movement and keeps her under belly dry and clean!
  3. any other recommendations that have made life easier in the cold, wet and dark, for you or your dog!

Many thanks!

Marking my place

And also tips for cleaning and drying cold muddy spaniels

I have a 3 year old lab so I’m considering just recarpetting in brown and painting the walls to match 😂🙈.

An Equafleece for your pooch (they do ones with a zip so it's easier to take on/off) Just bought DDog a new coat in flurescent with reflective strips 😂

Decent door mat (I've just bought a hug rug -wasn't expecting much- but it's really helped soak up wet paws coming in the house)

Headtorch and neoprene wellies

Hot chocolate (for you obvs 😂)

Looking forward to other suggestions 😂

A good microfibre dog towel. I got a cheap one at Home Bargains and it does a brilliant job of sucking all the mud off my dog's paws this time of year.

ChungKing · 08/10/2024 14:18

Oh, and my (now sadly deceased) old border used to love a self-heating pet pad in her bed at this time of year.

@outofofficeagain I hear you on a cold muddy spaniel!! I have a brilliant battery powered jet washer that I fill with warm water and either leave outside or take in car with me - it’s more powerful than a mud daddy type one and gets all the mud out of mine. The battery lasts about a week before needing to be recharged. Then a decent towelling coat and he dries relatively quickly

We have a line on the wall where our waggy dog wags off her mud.

Trice agility set - I use this inside during those horrible wet days when your dog is getting fractious. I make up little courses - jumping over, going in and out of cones, etc.

We have a shower attachment on the outdoor hose but maybe he'd prefer it warm.

What brand is it?

outofofficeagain · 08/10/2024 16:10

Ignore me. You've already linked it 🥰

FortunaMajor · 08/10/2024 16:26

Biggest game changer for me was a hot tap outside. If I turn the boiler temperature right down it's 37 degrees which is just right. I have a trigger operated showerhead that fixes onto the hose. Now I don't care how wet and muddy the dog gets.

muddyford · 08/10/2024 17:33

I bought Ancol blinker lights which I clip on the collar and in the slack of the lead. I have yellow leads for the dark mornings and a hi-vis tabard for me. Swish dog coats are gorgeous (like miniature horse rugs), waterproof and not too warm, paid c£25 on Amazon. A head torch has been an absolute game changer!

muddyford · 08/10/2024 17:34

And Ruff and Tumble drying coats - worth their weight in gold.

Feelingblue77 · 13/10/2024 11:24

Just had a chance to come back to the thread and so many great suggestions!

The suggested coats I will look into and after the rain this week a hat is a great suggestion!

I gave one of these hats which are quite good, and a Tilly hat (although did request a hat from above post link (rain hat company) but dh bought me a Tilly hat instead - adds to Christmas wish list, again).

coffeesaveslives · 13/10/2024 13:09

1 - IlluminOBI for lights - they're rechargeable, come in a variety of colours and can be clipped onto collars or harnesses very easily.

2 - Mine doesn't wear a coat on walks as I've never found one that isn't restrictive in some way, but we do take an old towel and a drying robe off Amazon for the car which seems to make a huge difference.

3 - decent quality footwear and waterproofs, and waterproof socks! Mine are off Amazon. Also, natural layers like merino are really good too. I also have two of everything so if one lot is still wet or damp, I'm at least putting on something warm and dry before I go out again.

A pot of Vaseline to rub into furry paws before going out in the snow. It stops snow/ice balls forming between the pads.

That is super useful advice.

As for mud, mine just goes in the river or the cattle trough before coming into the house (she enjoys water in all its forms except the shower/bath).
