‘10 day’ dog training

Has anyone tried any of the 10 day dog training courses? I’ve a couple of things I want to improve with my cocker (especially lead related) and I’m getting lots of ads for ‘Absolute Dogs’ and ‘Help! My Dog’ which both seem to work by getting a stronger bond through games first, which I like the idea of.

Of course they both have lots of positive testimonials, but I’m trying to find some first hand experiences

Not heard of them so no help from me sorry although this might bump for you Wink

They are good trainers but very much a business and designed for your to spend money with them. They can get you off on the right track but it takes way longer than 10 days to change anything.

You won't see any results in 10 days.

All they can do is show you how to achieve your goals...

PoliticalPossum · 07/10/2024 10:57

What are the specific issues you have? As it's a cocker and you mention the lead...I'm assuming it's half-choking itself and tugging? That really can't be fixed in 10 days... it'll take time and effort and a (very good) trainer to get a dog to overcome that sort of issue.

You would be better going to a gundog trainer and getting proper 1-2-1 training. Lead training can't be completed within 10 days, in fact no training can!

The Absolute Dogs courses really helped improve my dog’s pulling. I’d say the 10 days is how long it took to train me! The dog took longer. But I did see a fairly quick improvement…. I’m still doing the techniques now a year later, they’ve just become part of how I control the dog, like second nature

Yes completely that, plus random snapping at some dogs. We have made some progress with the pulling but the snapping is getting more frequent.

This is our 3rd dog over the years and the’ve all pulled on the lead and snapped at other dogs, so I’m sure it’s us who need training. I have the time now and this dog is a great learner so I’m really willing to take whatever time/effort is needed. With previous dogs I have done 1-2-1 training but I find they only see a snapshot of the issue, but to be fair that’s been a fair few years ago and life was super busy, so may be I should reconsider that again.

That’s good to hear that it did work for you. Does it work for anyone walking your dog, or does the walker need to know a specific technique?

Please do not give your money to Absolute Dogs or Help your Dog.

Absolute Dogs has been mixed up in puppy farming and has shown very little remorse. Help your Dog has been directly involved but somehow managed to slip through the net a bit. Thread on here explaining it all.

If you like the idea of games based training google Susan Garrett who was the first to do this ( and then copied very heavily by absolute dogs)

coffeesaveslives · 07/10/2024 13:08

I wouldn't use either company for the reason @KeenOtter has said. Absolute Dogs in particular were embroiled in a huge amount of controversy and a lot of trainers and walkers publicly spoke out and said they'd never touch them again.

All these taglines about training your dog in ten days are just a marketing gimmick - while I don't doubt it's possible to see improvements in that time, training is very much an ongoing issue, especially lead work which is well known to be an issue with spaniels anyway.

I was going to say this.

Lauren Langman, who was involved in all sorts of dubious practices, is sill a director of Absolute Dogs.

You can improve heelwork very quickly, but it takes a long time to get complete reliability in all situations. A gundog trainer should be able to help you.

Absolutedogs is no good for your issues.

Look at LAT training and/or engage/disengage games. See leslie mcdevitt on youtube
