Are these red flags or expected things for slightly older dog for re-homing?

I made enquiries today through a breed-specific Facebook group to try and find a slightly older dog (3-5 years) that needs a new home. I'd prefer to get a slightly older house trained dog rather than handle the puppy stage - although I suspect that dogs for rehoming will most usually have a traumatic past?

Anyway, a breeder got in touch with me and said she has a 4 year old dog that needs homing. She shared pics and videos of the dog , in which she was petting him, he looked calm and relaxed and happy enough. The dog's circumstances are sad - so I checked if this would be a suitable homing for me as a first-time dog owner, if the dog may have behavioural issues. She didn't respond to this question.

There were also a couple of other concerns which I'd appreciate thoughts on:

-I asked for customer testimonials and was shown cut and pasted typed references. I was told that she couldn't share contact details for me to contact any of them due myself to privacy issues. Is this fair enough?

-One of the references mentions how sad it is that the breeder got reported to trading standards and had some of her pups taken away from her by a 'malicious' person. I checked the breeder's website and this looks legit - there is lots of support for her and she has a Go Fund Me to try and appeal the pups being taken from her - but I find it odd that the customer reference she shared mentions and defends this issue.

-the dog that needs homing went to its second home at 6 months. All was apparently fine there until the owners divorced 16 weeks ago. since then the dog has been 'caged' for most of the day and then again at night time. It has lost much of its fur during that time due to to stress, but it is now growing back and the dog is starting to be calm and happy again.

-the dog is going for 300 pounds. He hasn't been neutered

-He was wearing a nappy thing in the photo. Apparently he has weed in the house a couple of times for marking, but otherwise is trained. The breeder said it's a wise idea to put the nappy things on male dogs if you leave them at home for a bit. Is this right?

The dog is just the sort I want and I'd love to give him a happy home - but is this scenario sounding okay for a first time owner?

Yeah, skip this one.

So many red flags. I'd pass as sounds like you would have a whole heap of trouble.

I wouldn't find the reference thing odd, she'll have assumed you'd find out about that incident and wanted to include something to cover her arse when you did. The actual incident is odd though, they don't just take animals based on one complaint, malicious or not, and trading standards can't remove animals at all. The rest of it - red flags bigger than a house!

You're inexperienced and the dog has MAJOR issues and is coming from people who don't know what they are doing.

No dog should wear a nappy as it should NEVER be left long enough to warrant peeing in the home.

Please avoid.

It really worries me that you can't see the red flags here.

Please don't re-home over the internet - go to a proper rescue centre.

muddyford · 07/10/2024 06:23

As PP has said, go to a proper rescue centre. The dog you are looking at has disaster written all over him.

loudbatperson · 07/10/2024 06:44

Don't touch, so many red flags. Go to a reputable rehiring center.

We’ve got male dogs not neutered (not recommended now if they are older and it’s not causing any issues), there is no weeing round the house at all. They manage from 9.30 -6.30 every single night for just fine.

pilates · 07/10/2024 07:05

Yes sadly I would avoid

What breed? Breed specific Facebook pages really do seem to be where all the dickheads unite. Fur babies and dog mummy and the like. I wouldn't go there for advice, rehoming or frankly, anything.

Google breed specific rescues if you like this breed.
