Greyhound in middle/old age

My rescue boy is 8.5 yes old, been with me 4 years and apart from poor teeth has been in good health.

Three times recently he seems to have had an issue where he has sort of lost control of his bowels. This morning, he'd been out in the garden as usual, and had a wee, then we were in the car to a favourite walking spot, and 5 mins in to the journey, he pooped, on his bed in the car boot. He has never done this before.

The first time, we were at a garden centre where we've been before and suddenly as we were walking through he pooped, whilst continuing to walk, and didn't seem to notice he'd done it.

And then the other occasion he was at home, but I wasn't there, so I don't really know what happened. Family was with him and he went in the study. He's never done that before, but at the time I wondered if they just hadn't realised he wanted to go out, although that would be unusual.

Each time there's been no other sign of an upset tummy. He's had opportunity to go recently and he's seemed fine after.

Does anyone with experience of dogs think this is age related, or potentially the early stages of something else? He's eating and drinking fine and had a clean bill of health from the vet in July. It's so occasional it doesn't seem worth a vet trip at the moment, but if it continues I'll pop him to them.

It might be related to a spinal issue. I would see my vet.

I hadn't thought of that, but maybe I do need to take him then

Aw, something similar happened with our Greyhound too, but he also started being quite unsteady on his back legs too. I’d definitely say a trip to the vets.

@Changingplace thinking about it I'm wondering if he's had a couple of stumbles, I'd just put it down to uneven ground. Do you mind me asking what happened with your hound?

Definitely book him in to the vets. July was three months ago and a lot can change in three months.

Thank you, yes, I'm going to phone them today and book an appointment. He's a typical greyhound and whilst he will make a fuss over a fly buzzing near him, when he's had actual injuries he's never shown any sign of being in pain, so I'd hate to miss anything.
