Sleep issues in adult dog. Please help!

Ddog is being a real PITA when it comes to sleep; she’s not a puppy or a teen. For an unknown reason, her usual settled sleep space on her bed in my room is no longer working for her and she wants to be ON my bed.

I have spent the last week trying to get her back in to her own bed without success. I have bought a new bed for her, moved her space around, brought her bed closer to me. Nothing has worked.

She will not settle unless on my bed and she barks and cries and whines all night long unless she’s on my bed. I end up giving up because I’m exhausted and we also live in a terrace with thin walls. When she is on my bed, she sleeps fairly soundly and so do I.

But this is not what I wanted. I wanted her in her own bed where she has happily slept for years.

What can I do to resolve this and how long will it take? I need my sleep every night otherwise I cannot function.

Please take her to the vet for a check-up. Any significant change in behaviour like that needs to be checked out in case she's in pain or has some kind of underlying condition going on.

Sorry I should have mentioned in my OP, she’s been to the vet and had a clean bill of health.

How old is she? Are there any other behavioural changes? I would wonder whether a pain trial could be helpful.

Is she getting cold overnight ? We have an elderly dog and he sleeps in a bed in our room but I always cover him with a blanket and when it gets really cold leave the heating on for him .

LordOfTheLabs · 05/10/2024 12:48

She’s a 6 year old Shih Poo. I don’t think she’s cold, as her basket is lined and she has extra blankets and a heat pad if needed. Her new bed is also cosy. She also starts getting on my bed as soon as the lights go off at 10pm so she’s not waking up to come in, she’s just not going in to start with.

I can’t decide between going hard core tonight and persevering with putting her back or to just give up and let her sleep on my bed with me. I much rather she be in her basket .

She’s just come up to lay on my bed with me whilst I have a snooze (I’m poorly) and I’ve kicked her off in to her own bed next to me and again she’s starting with the whining and crying. I really believe this is behavioural rather than medical.

Lots of behavioural and medical changes are linked - but of course she could just be trying her luck.

Could you put a pen around her bed, put some earplugs in and just ignore her?

LordOfTheLabs · 05/10/2024 13:04

Clearly I have no determination whatsoever. I’ve just tried to get her to sleep in her basket and ignore the whining but then she started panting which I know is a sign of stress.

I obviously don’t want her stressed so I let her up, she gave me a face lick and plonked next to me. She obviously just wants to be next to me.

I’m now googling dog friendly throws to cover my bed. Does anyone else let their dog sleep on their bed? She’s crate trained for when I need to go out in the day time and I really hope this won’t impact on that. Is it likely?

I haven’t got much advice as I let both mine sleep on the bed, dunelm mill - fluffy blankets are my go to as they are both easy to wash and super quick to dry.
One of my dogs is 14 has gone all but completely blind and now has to sleep right pressed up against me whereas before she was happy at the bottom of the bed, I haven’t really questioned it even if I’m now a guest in my own bed 😊

Ours has slept on/in the bed since day one, lol. He's never been crated either, just has free run of downstairs while we're out.

Scutterbug · 05/10/2024 14:18

Mine sleeps on the bed too. I just use throws/blankets which can be cleaned easily.

Bupster · 06/10/2024 19:56

Mine sleeps on the bed. I love it. It makes them feel secure - so maybe she's just having a wobble and needs the reassurance?

Accept your fate op. Only a human pillow is good enough for your pooch...
