Dog in pain - vet said is muscular

Hi all,

I have a super energetic 4 yo Border Terrier. Yesterday she became all lethargic and refused to go upstairs or jump up on sofa etc. I spoke to vet who said because she is eating and going to toilet as normal this will be muscular. He suggested lomicom and paracetamol. I have started on lomicom today and she will have paracetamol when she eats. I'm hoping she will pick up. I'm concerned because she is not herself. I went out for 30 mins and she was where I left her but shaking. She is asleep now. Can muscular pain cause this kind of lethargy?? Any similar experiences??

Thanks
Thanks all.

Did the vet actually check her over?

Elizo · 24/09/2024 11:20

No we spoke on the phone. Said give her pain killers and see. No toilet issues, vomiting, or other symptoms. Am taking her out now to see how she is...

How was she? I really think a dog who is shaking needs to be seen by a vet in person and evaluated properly.

I'd want her physically checked. It could be anything. Spinal issues, leg problems, anything.

Thanks all. She was chirpy on her walk - I think the pain killers have kicked in. Trying to chase squirrels etc although on lead as don’t want her to overdo it. She is still reluctant to go upstairs or jump up though.

My vet, who I trust and has a v good rep round here, was clear no need to bring her in. But I agree if she isn’t picking up quickly I’ll take her in

Just keep an eye on her. Let’s hope this settles down quickly and was nothing. What you describe could be all manner of things, many of which first line vets could struggle to identify (some things need specialists). But if your vet is one in whom you have confidence then that’s a good start. Hope she (pup) is ok

Oh and yes my dog has had episodes of shaking from pain. His was a bad muscle sprain that took a long time to get over/resolve and lots of rehab and physio. Still not 100% ok yet.

if it resolves but ever happens again, or (god forbid) is recurring, keep a diary re what’s going on around it happening (before/during) and video diary for your vet.

Thanks all - she has started going up and down stairs again and been barking at cats in the garden so looking up I think. Painkillers definitely working. I'll keep a close eye
