We are about to adopt an ex racing greyhound. I've been doing research but this will be my first dog.

Anyone got any words of wisdom?!

I'm nervous but so happy and excited too.

Thanks everyone. The place we adopted him from drilled it into me multiple times that he mustn't be woken up as he can react very badly, this is why I was concerned.

Ahhh
So, my experience of sleep startle with my Greyhound is based on direct touch (or even moving near something that then touches him) when he is asleep. It is literally that 'startle' he will snap the air or bark/growl ...he looks guilty a few seconds later when he realises lol. Just never go up to them and touch them directly. Sometimes they look awake but are asleep. I call my boy and make sure he raises his head.
I'm lucky enough never to have to deal with sleeping upstairs or trying to sleep with us (then startling) as mine seems to think he can't do my stairs.

In time, when they get to know the sounds and signals of the house they'll come running. Rattling leads, cans, butter dishes and my husband putting on his work belt (chew time) means my grey comes running.

I still can't work out if mine is a bit dim or a bit arrogant...if they really don't want to to do something they won't though.

I'm chuckling because you hear how lazy they are, but don't realise quite how much until you actually have one, it really is quite astonishing.
Last night mine decided to collapse after playing with his kibble ball for five mins, then he lay on his bed staring at it and whining. It was max 30cm away. I read something recently on Facebook (lots of great greyhound advice groups on there) that said something like 'former elite athlete, can't be bothered to raise his head when I walk into the room'.

They are adorable and quirky. Love them so much.

How are you and the lovely greyhound getting on OP?
