Do you walk your dog when it’s pouring all day?

It’s pouring with rain so I don’t want to go out, but I’m feeling guilty. I have a doggy raincoat I can pop on him so that’s no issue, I’m just feeling bleh and the rain isn’t exactly motivating. Do you trudge out regardless?

@Lorrymum I have a schnauzer too-she doesn't mind the rain but does wear a raincoat -just a little zip up the back one because she does feel the cold and will reach saturation point.
Have you tried equafleece coats? Not for raincoat but for warmth in the cold weather? So so easy and fuss free-no velcro or annoying bits.
Wet and muddy it goes straight in the washing machine.
And no I don't work for equafleece but honestly they are brilliant.

Thanks, that sounds ideal. I think its the velcro she hates and a zip would do the trick.

I used too, but Ddog is very elderly and refuses to go out in the rain. When a younger dog, we'd be out in all weathers but I feel as an oldie (dog not me....although I'm no spring chicken either!) Ddog gets to choose!

I’m about to rehome my dog as he missed a walk a week last Wednesday.

Yup, me too; our pup wasn't walked yesterday because she had a squidgy tummy... guess that means I'll have to hand her over to a less cruel owner...😞

Usually end up being shorter walks in the rain as they'd often be giving me the 'urrgh can we go home now' stinkeye even with a coat on, unless it's a novel walk for some distraction from the awfulness and they'll sprint back in the direction of home or the car. If its heavy rain when I open the front door they'd be trying to go back to bed and refusing to go out so it ends up being quick toilet dash.

If your not a fan of walking when it's wet/windy/cold get a greyhound (other wimpy sighthounds are available), they're usually more reluctant to go outside in it than you are. Being sprinters greyhounds don't need much exercise to tire them out, just standing upright for a while is a workout for some and often require about 21+ hrs lounging around to recharge their batteries.

Depends on the breed. My whippet looks at me in absolute disgust when I drag her out, even with a coat on. I usually open the door, she rushes up to go outside, then sees the rain falling and sprints back to her sofa, giving me a horrified side eye 😅

She's a bit thick though, bless her, as anyone would be with a skull that's slimmer than their neck 😅 She doesn't need as much stimulation as something like a collie or a cocker spaniel, who would be eating the walls and doors if they had to stay in for a day. She just emits a painted sigh and goes right back to sleep until more food appears.

I completely disagree about Whippets being ''Thick'' - They are quick to learn and obedient -and extremely perceptive.

Blizzard Dog coats are the best I've used for really driving rain {Have one in use that's 32 years old! } - they do have a velcro surcingle, but Equafleece are very good- {A Blizzard over an Equafleece is a good idea for extreme weather}

Equafleece are warm, and keep all but the heavy rain off- however in my experience in extreme weather, on the ''jumper'' type equafleece with legs and an undercarriage part can get sodden.

The ''coat'' type are better for wet weather. The coats have a plastic 'snap' surcingle. {pic}

Is this your dog or a product photo? What a beauty!

One day without a walk won't hurt your dog if you’re unwell, make him a lickimat or play with him for an hour!

pigsDOfly · 17/09/2024 14:43

Agree that the odd day without a walk won't hurt.

When the weather's very hot we sometimes miss a day or even two if we can't make it during the cooler parts of the day.

No harm has ever come to my dog because of it. Yes, she will be a bit bored but we play in the house or the garden, which is shady and she's fine.

It really doesn't do to be too rigid because there will be times when you can't manage a walk.
