7 month old male started humping

Our seven month old has started trying to hump our arms. Any advice on how to stop this please. I’ve read you should try to stop it becoming a habit a redirect. I had assumed he’d be neutered at this age but advice seems to be now to wait until 18months.

Errrm. what? What a silly thing to be concerned about, honestly.

There is plenty of research neutering too early affects bone strength amongst other issues. All puppies hump. Ignore and he will grow out of it, whether neutered or not

What a horrible reply

@newusern9999 try not to worry, its adolesence, totally normal. Do try and redirect but its raging hormones so done be overly concerned

Just ignore him - we stood up, turned around and avoided eye contact when ours went through that phase. They soon get bored!

Neutering probably wouldn't help by the way, humping is generally down to over excitement in dogs - it's rarely sexual.

Even if it didn’t start till seven months?

@newusern9999 - yep, pretty much.

While humping can be sexual, it's one of those behaviours that has multiple other causes too - and there's absolutely no guarantee that neutering will make any difference, which is why you need to treat it as a behavioural issue rather than one to be solved by surgery, if that makes sense.

I work with dogs and the worst humpers I know are all neutered. In fact, I've only ever seen one of the entire males hump in the five years I've been in business, and it's very much down to over-excitement in his case - it's certainly not sexual.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 14/09/2024 07:49

Anecdotally, the worst humper I ever met was a neutered female terrier!

clarkkentsglasses · 14/09/2024 07:50

It's not sexual. It's excitement

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 14/09/2024 08:28

Mine did it from day one (literally the day I bought him home!!) Very often it’s actually over stimulation and excitement not sexual at all

KeenOtter · 14/09/2024 08:54

Often happens when the puppy is tired or over stimulated and needs a rest. Try to give the puppy time to chill out quietly.

If they do hump your arm remove arm and give a chew toy or redirect to a calm activity.

You may find there is a time of day they do it more so prepare in advance to stop it happening. Eg encouage a sleep before it happens.

Ancedotal I find it tends to happen when the teeth have come through and they stop mouthing as much be then some dogs tend to change to humping.

FastFood · 14/09/2024 09:07

Mine tries sometimes.
I always gently push him back.
Before, he used to try again maybe once or twice, but now he just stops, end of drama.
He's 2 and non-neutered.
