Hi,

Please can I have product recommendations for my puppy I am bringing one next week ?

I have bought a crate, food bowl and water bowl so far. The rescue will provide his lead and harness .
I am planning to shop this weekend so any product recommendations would be great !

A Kong chew! The best thing I bought for my puppy.

HerewegoagainSS · 12/09/2024 20:24

What breed are you getting OP? Different breeds will have different personalities.

I would get a chain lead. Our pup bit through his baby lead straightaway 🤣 and the vet recommended it. Doggo soon learned not to do that.
As for any rubbish about ‘make him learn to walk on a neck collar’, if he is a pulling breed, don’t listen. Use a harness. We persisted on a neck collar with our lab for months. He hated it, we hated it. We then got him a simple chest harness (never a halti type mouth one - don’t agree with those) and he walked like an angel. He is 4 now and still has it.

Get him a blanket that smells of you to sleep on (I gave mine my old dressing gown). Ticking clock under the bed can simulate his littermates heartbeats too and calm an anxious pup.
GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY HIM 🐾🐾🐾

And we need a puppy pic when you get him!

A variety of toys, tug toys, balls and chews. Bedding for crate, we also had a black blanket to cover crate to make it a cozy den. Take this time to puppy proof your house, hiding cables, switches and maybe a stair gate to stop puppy going upstairs. Don’t bother with puppy pads, our puppy just used to shred them to bits. You should also get a name tag for collar. Also depending on breed you will need a brush, soft one at first just to get puppy used to being brushed, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrush.

It is a jack russel puppy. 6 months old :)
I've heard some horror stories about Jack russels so trying to be prepared!

Yeah the puppy pads is a big issue for me. I really don't know whether to try toilet training him initially with puppy pads and then transitioning to garden. Toilet training is my biggest fear!!!!

Deffo getting him toys. The rescue said he hasn't shown any interest in toys yet which I was really surprised at !

Re kitchen gate I was going to get one for the kitchen so his accidents would only be initially confined to the kitchen. But then I feel awful isolating him in the kitchen :( But don't want accidents in every single house.

We've had our mini dachs for five weeks now. I tried to get along with puppy pads but he wouldn't use them and as a PP said, just ripped them to bits. I now just take him outside when he wakes up from a nap and if I see him sniffing intently around somewhere in the house he's 'been' before.

In addition to what other PP's have said, we got training treats, a dog bed, car seat, those collapsible food bowls (for when we're out and about), and a puppy pen.

In his crate we put warm water in bottles and put them under the blanket.

It's our first puppy so we may well have gone over the top a bit.

Thanks for recommendation of a chain lead @HerewegoagainSS. I've only had him on the lead in the garden, but he chews his current lead.

As someone who has recently had a puppy who is now 5 months, other than what others have said. Plenty of carpet shampoo and floor cleaner because you will need it 🙈. Mine still has accidents in the house despite every time he’s taken out he toilets outside so he knows but he’s intent of doing one in my kitchen or on his bed. However I have a beagle and they are known for being stubborn and struggling with toilet training.

I’ll probably get a lot of stick but mine is in the kitchen too. He’s never isolated because someone is more or less always in and out of there and I make sure I go in to play or do some training every so often as well. He gets walks too obviously. Once he clicks the toilet training fully he can have full run of the house but with a 2 year old crawling round/walking round I’m not having the living room covered in dog wee for my children to crawl through. Unless you have a proper carpet cleaner your never going to fully get it out so maybe worth looking into that too.

Also depending on your situation you may wish to crate train. I didn’t like the idea but it’s much safer for him when I have to nip on the school run that he’s in there not chewing things he shouldn’t be. Now he takes himself in the crate (I leave the door open all day)

Finally, plenty of wine because you’re going to need it 😂. I cried a few days into getting mine, I so underestimated how difficult a puppy would be.

However, I love him dearly ❤️

Will a 6 month old already have been toilet trained? Maybe?

Bupster · 13/09/2024 12:45

Don't bother with puppy pads! I still have the entire box I ordered. If you train him on puppy pads you'll still have to train him in the garden again so you'll be doing it twice. But unless he was a stray before rescuing, at 6 months he should have had some toilet training. The rescue should be able to tell you how he's toileting now at least.

Mumoftwo57 · 13/09/2024 13:43

Sorry - missed the part about being 6 months, however mines 5 and still hasn’t cracked it so I wouldn’t 100% guarantee he’ll be fully consistently toilet trained but as I said mines a beagle and they are known for struggling with toilet training and being stubborn 😂🥰 x

Anon645 · 13/09/2024 14:02

Hi, the rescue centre have confirmed he is not toilet trained at all despite being 6 months old and will have to start from the very beginning 😭😭
Guessing his precious owners didn't bother training him

Mumoftwo57 · 13/09/2024 14:22

He’ll get there, just need a lot of patience and accept your going to be outside every 30mins/1 hour to begin with 😊

buddieitsdestiel · 17/09/2024 10:14

I'm adopting a 4 month old soon and i've bought:
a crate + bed mat for downstairs
a crate + comfy bed for upstairs/bedtime
a variety of toys (balls, ropes, squeakers, teddies etc.) to see what he likes most.
A slip lead, a regular clip lead, a long line for recall training, and a waist lead. The waist lead is for him to be attached to me at home, during training and when he’s not having a nap. This is to ensure he can't go off and chew things he shouldn't or chase the cats etc. but also isn't confined to a room or pen/crate. Many trainers recommend this and it's great for ensure you’re always with them to avoid toilet accident, and getting them used to the lead!
A collar and harness + ID tag (legal requirement)
Food and bowls.
Poop bags, the ones with tie handles!
Puppy safe shampoo for if he has any bad accidents or a messy walk and requires a bath!
Treats, rolls of pate to be chopped and frozen as "high value" treats for training.
Nail clippers, tooth brush/paste and grooming brushes. Get puppy used to all these things early on so you don't have to worry about fighting them on it later on/at the vets or groomers!
Boots - this is optional of course but it's a good thing to try to desensitise them too as a puppy as if they are happy to wear booties it will help you protect their paws in the heat/snow/and old age if they need to wear the non-slip shoes :)
A seatbelt attachment for the car (you can crate in the car but i prefer harness and lead so he can enjoy looking out the windows)
a KONG!!! and lickimats + toppings. This is a MUST BUY for their mental health and yours 🤣
A doggy towel and a doggy wash robe. A towel is a must for after baths and a wash robe is a worthy bonus, it's hard to get dogs totally dry after being totally wet so if you can wrap them up in a little robe they smell less wet doggy and keeps the house cleaner and them warmer!
Cleaning supplies for accidents.

And finally, a paw print ink kit/pad for day 1 because i'm sentimental like that 🥰

Sorry for the essay, hope this helps! 💛

Personally, I wouldn't spend very much at all until the puppy is in your home and settled. I spent a fortune on ours and I r never touched half of it!
