Hi,

Hoping to adopt a puppy from rescue next week provided all goes okay with checks etc.

I would be very grateful if I could gain as much tips and helpful advice as possible about having a puppy /raising them / settling them in etc

Please tell me ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING there is to know about puppies!!

They estimate the puppy to be 6 months but due to the puppy being abandoned this is an estimate only. ..

Its good that you're asking but it sounds like you're leaving it very late to get this information. Have you ever had a dog before?

Yes I have had dogs but I've always adopted older dogs previously.
The centre has given limited info, just told me not to use puppy pads...

Which rescue centre is this? I can’t believe this is all the information they have given you, they sound very dodgy. They should know more about the puppy personally than a bunch of internet randoms!!

JSMill · 11/09/2024 17:56

Puppies need chill time. If they are over stimulated, they can be hyper and people think they have a naughty dog, not understanding it's a dog who needs some down time. Are you planning on crate training it?
Puppy proof your house as much as possible. Provide chew toys.
See if there's a Facebook group for your breed. I have a beagle and belong to a brilliant facebook group where people share advice and support each other.

The dogs have met once? That’s it?! This is so dangerous and they sound beyond competent in not preparing your properly… but years as a fosterer tells me this is incredibly normal from big charities.

Helpful advice; keep adult dog and puppy separated in the house at all times for at least the first few weeks. Keep puppy away from anything it might eat that’s a choking hazard. Do not ignore the adult dog to focus on the puppy.

FWIW, adult dogs react to puppies in their home very differently to how they react to adult dogs. I’ve been the OOH vet on call when an existing dog killed the puppy - owners turned their back for two seconds. So you’ll need to be on your toes at all times, OP, if you can’t keep them separate.

Please tell me you’re getting dogs of different genders?!

Thanks for this.

Yes I'm planning crate training for nighttime sleeping but I know this can be challenging.

What steps can I take to puppy proof my house? I'm needing to protect my skirting boards ideally too..

They have to meet twice minimum before adoption and so far they have met once. Second meet will be on the weekend hopefully

Yes, my 9 year old current dog is so very very loved so he will continue to be cuddled and spoilt, no worries about that!!

No, both dogs are the same gender.

I'm reading as much as I can online from various websites and forums, but I thought it might be helpful on here too.

Get a large pen for the puppy that way you can contain them when necessary and provide a time out sone for them and your older dog. Make it a fun space with chew toys and rope toys but nothing squeaky (it makes them hyper!)

Ignore the folks questioning your reasons/capability, enjoy your puppy I'm sure they will be very much loved!

That's great to hear!

And better that they are both boys (two bitches is a nightmare!) Best of luck 😃

JSMill · 11/09/2024 20:27

I can't advise about skirtings etc. We got lucky that our dog wasn't apparently interested in chewing the skirting thankfully. Keep shoes and slippers well out of the way. Put things like remotes, keys and wallets in safe places. Having a pen, as previously suggested, may help. Also have eyes in the back of your head and remember silence isn't always golden with a puppy!! They may be being quiet because they are up to no good!!

Advice444 · 12/09/2024 10:13

Anyone have any must ha e product recommendations? I have got a crate ready.

Anyone have any ideas how I can protect my skirting boards? Do skirting board protective covers exist?
