Don't have anywhere he can go for a few hours while the move is actually happening unfortunately.

I'm thinking to keep him at the current house for as long as possible as he can be kept in his room at the back of the house. Dog walker can take him for an hour. Anything else I can do to manage this? Feeling very stressed!

Does he ever spend short periods in a crate? It might be good to practice and make it a haven for him. Then he’s got it when u move to your new place. A meaty bone in a crate will probably be a delight for him. Happy moving 😀

If he is anything like our boy I can just imagine him being into everything and jumping around going I help I help I help so you have my full sympathy 😂😂😂🐾

Can you put him in kennels for a couple of days?

I would put our cats in a cattery if we ever moved again. One of ours escaped about 15 minutes before we were due to lock up and leave for the final time. Luckily my neighbour agreed to feed and capture her and ring me to collect her (we were moving across the city so not too far away).

I would pay to put him in kennels for two days while you do the move if there's no family or friends who could take him.

For me, the risk of him getting stressed and upset (or worse, escaping and getting lost) would be too high and I'd be too worried about him to relax properly.

We moved recently, a staggered move as we had to break the chain. On move in day we managed to leave her with my parents, but on move out day she was with us. We paid for packing and so me and her just sat in our car whilst my husband supervised/got in the packers way. We had planned to go out for a long walk but it was raining (my dog doesn't appreciate rain).

I moved with a 1 year old lab x pointer. He went to kennels for 2 days.

Thanks all. Kennels not an option as he doesn't do car travel (we're working on it).

We re also having packers so hopefully that will speed things up 🤞

If kennels aren't an option then I think one of you needs to be "out" with the dog all day - either on a walk or somewhere else, so that he doesn't get stressed or over-excited.

Anyone within walking distance that offers home boarding?

Have you tried going out on bus with them? May be more relaxed as you are with them.

How are you getting dog to the new house?

pigsDOfly · 08/09/2024 15:28

I've moved 4 times with my dog. The first time when she was 4 months old and I also had two cats and two guinea pigs, the last time she was around 10/11 years old.

I did think about putting her into kennels the first time but decided against it in the end.

I kept her in one room some of the time on a long line, not an extending lead, so that she could move around but wasn't able to run away, and repeatedly reminded everyone that she was in that room; the cats were also in the room with her. The cats were older so were more than happy to just chill all day.

Otherwise, I had her with me on her lead the rest of the time.

PP suggested getting a dog walker to take your dog out during the day, I think that's a very good idea.

HariboFrenzy · 08/09/2024 15:55

Thanks all. He will be walked to the new house (not going far)! Already have dog walker taking him for an hour. In a perfect world a family member would take him for the day but it's not an option unfortunately. I've googled dog boarders but can't find any within walking distance, only pet sitters that do care in the let's home which isn't much use in this situation 🙈

Have you checked if the dogwalker knows anyone locally who could take the dog for the day? The one I used socially networks with other local dog walkers, boarders/daycare. The travel issues does sound limiting though.
