Dog fences

Our previously dog proof boundary is now been breached on a fairly regular basis by badgers chewing through fairly heavy duty wire mesh and one of our food obsessed spaniels has, as a result, discovered where next doors stable cat's food is left. Not a good or safe combination! Has anyone tried one of the geo based invisible fences?

I would strongly recommend against them for all sorts of reasons.

They work via a collar that either vibrates or causes an electric shock. So if your dog tries to cross the boundary and gets stuck (eg on some wire or a branch), the collar will go off continuously which will either frighten your dog or cause him pain.

If your dog does cross the boundary (because they decide that what's on the other side is worth the collar going off) you risk them being too afraid to come back over (because they know it will set the collar off).

You risk the dog associating the unpleasant sensation of the collar with something other than crossing the boundary - eg. they may try and cross the boundary, the collar goes off and they see a child, so they learn children = scary.
