One more reason why I prefer cats Envy

Cats need their analysis glands checking as well!

FuckThePoPo · 30/08/2024 20:19

You only know about them
when you're sitting with your dog and notice a lovely smell which reminds you of your grandads old shrimp boat then there's a patch on your jeans that looks like a dead greasy shrimp

OldTinHat · 30/08/2024 20:28

My old doggo never had a problem with his ever.

Newsenmum · 30/08/2024 20:33

Ideally their anal glands get naturally expressed when they poop, but some dogs can get backed up and need help to express them. And I'm afraid to tell all you cat people that they have anal glands too Grin and can have the same issues. Dark, smelly liquid being inappropriately passed is a sign that anal glands might not be naturally passing during toileting.

LeroyJenkinssss · 30/08/2024 20:47

Wait, what?! Okay I can’t tell my DH this - he only reluctantly agreed to the dog (who he loves but doesn’t on occasion like). If he finds out about this…

SilverShadowNight · 30/08/2024 21:23

My dog needs theirs emptying regularly, but they are malformed and don't empty themselves, and due to the malformation, additional fibre etc wouldn't help.

But most dogs should be fine.

My parent's dog had a real issue with her anal glands, it was foul. Vet said to put her on a dry food only diet and she's not had any issues since, this was all at least 12 years ago so it must work. I think it was something to do with the dry food making her poo firmer and therefore helping them empty naturally rather than build up. We aren't sure exactly how old she is as she was a rescue but she must be at least 16/17.

My elderly cat had issues with her anal glands. She felt much better when released by the vet. Unfortunately the vet was in the way when they were released

I have more problems with the cats glands than the dogs!
