At my wits end... can anyone help?

My dog is a small pug age 7, really great health and has had a few UTIs in her life. She was spayed as a puppy too.

This year there's been three occasions where she's peed blood and peed in the house, completely unlike her so we've done the usual, got a sample and gone to the vets. All three times it's been clear, perfect urine.

She's just peed blood again with a little tissue which I've managed to get onto a napkin and in a bag (for the vets) but what could it be?

I'm at my wits end. I'm spending £70 a time going to the vets to get her urine checked and nothing is coming back. I don't want to put her under any unnecessary stress with tests etc but will do if that's what we need to do.

Can anyone help? Happy to share the picture I have but I'm not sure what to do. Surely if something was up it would appear in her urine when they've done the previous tests? Or am I being naive?

Any help to a 39 week pregnant mum who is hormonal and little stressed about her pup would be greatly appreciated 🤍

I'd try another vet for a second opinion. Dogs don't pee blood without reason... and it's very likely to be a UTI in a spayed dog.

marshmallowfinder · 22/08/2024 18:43

Cystitis or bladder stones maybe? Did they examine the urine for presence of crystals?

sunsetsandboardwalks · 22/08/2024 18:51

Did they test her for bladder/urinary crystals?

Augustisnearlydonesogoodbyesun · 22/08/2024 18:57

Ddog had blood in her urine. Pee sticks came back normal. Costly scan apparently showed a small mass... Very costly surgery showed no mass at all but cell tests showed likely but not diagnoses bladder cancer....

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 22/08/2024 19:08

If they offered no opinion or alternative thoughts on other testing, the the first thing I’d do is find another vet for a second opinion as PP said.

Thanks for all your replies, I very much appreciate it.

They said they couldn't find any crystals under the microscope and offered to send it away but were confident that it was super clear.

The vet did mention it could be stress related due to the fact I'm due to give birth immediately. Could that be a factor? I mean no other concerns with her, eating and walking fine, no whimpering etc.

I would give her a 100% carnivore diet OP. A lot of plant material has oxalates that cause bladder stones as well as crystal formation in their soft tissues.

Remove all kibble/plant matter from her diet and this should make all the difference.

Can you consciously watch her wee for a couple of days? Ddog was straining and hardly any came out. She was totally her self in every other way. She is on costly meds to slow down any cancerous cell changes.. But no cure. And not even definitely that!! Referral place wanted 2.5k to investigate!! Couldn't afford to feed /house ddog if paid for that!!

sunsetsandboardwalks · 22/08/2024 19:49

I would get the sample sent away if they haven't already, just to rule it out completely.

But yes, if you're heavily pregnant that could definitely be playing a part. Is she still getting the same amount of exercise, attention and stimulation?

Newuser75 · 22/08/2024 20:03

Is she insured? If so or if money isn't an issue I'd get further investigations. Possibly ultrasound/X-rays but certainly a second opinion from a specialist vet. I'd be wary about putting it down to stress without ruling out other possibilities first.

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 23/08/2024 21:03

Could it be Ovarian remnant syndrome where a very small piece of tissue is left behind when they were spayed. A friend has a bitch that is spayed but still has occasional light bleeding and shows all the character signs of being in season. Her vet said it’s not that uncommon.

TallulahTaboo · 24/08/2024 12:03

Thank you all so much for your replies, I really do appreciate the tips and advice!

We've had no blood in her urine since my last post, we've got into the habit of checking the last few weeks so that's a positive sign. I'm under no false illusion that somethings probably going on but what I'm not sure.

I'll see how she goes over the next few days as ideally wanting to grab a urine sample with blood in it to show the vets I'm not crazy and see what next steps they can offer us. I agree, more investigations need done. We have great insurance (£110 a month) so having any tests done is absolutely fine and we encourage it too.

I'll let you know how we go over the next few days... but thank you for your help. They say kids worry you but my God, pets do too!

My pug had this and it was a massive bladder stone - I'm talking it filled her bladder. She didn't act in pain and the vet was shocked when he saw it.

TallulahTaboo · 16/09/2024 08:46

Just an update... took her to the vets and had a scan, nothing showed up and the Vet said unless we opted for a CT she was 99% confident there was nothing going on. She does have another UTI.

Just one of these things that our little pug has and will probably continue to have.

Thanks for everyone's input and advice, very much appreciated! 😄
