Leaving dog in the car - lock or not?

What does everyone do when you have to leave dog in the car, do you lock the doors or leave the doors unlocked? If I lock i can't leave a window open, if it's unlocked then there is a risk of the car or dog being taken. I'm still fairly new to dog ownership so apologies if this is a really obvious question.

I'd love to take dog out for day trips and be able to let her relax in the car if we we were to go for a bite to eat or even just for a few minutes popping into a shop or toilet. She doesn't walk much, she pulls to go back so I'd love to take her for a short walk then leave her in the car while I continue. These days I'm taking her out less because she will only walk a few mins and I need to do a longer walk and I don't know what to do. Some days she doesn't get out at all because of this.

Locked with window open a bit. What make of car doesn't let you do that?

@RedHelenB it's a Nissan leaf electric, quite new. In fairness I'm useless with cars so maybe it's an obvious thing to someone else. I can't disable it by using my key which I could do with my old car but there might be some other setting I need to change.

My dogs are happy in the car. I've only left them if popping in to the shops on the drive back from the park though I used to leave them when I went to Pilates class. Nice walk before and little one after and they just slept.
Of course never ever leave them on a warm sunny day!
As for locking the doors, no as there's a motion detector and they'd set the alarm off. This can be disabled but as it's such a short time I haven't bothered.
They are in the back and you can't see through the windows and they don't make any noise so no one would know they are in there, so I'm not worried about them getting stolen.

A dog should never be left in a car on even a mild or mildly warm day, let alone a hot one. It is so unbelievably horrendous that people consider doing this.

Unlocked. In deep shade with the windows open and with water provided. Obviously it's not recommended, but like lots of things that aren't recommended, leaving dog in car can be done for short periods IF you are very, very careful. (Deep shade meaning eg in the shade of a building, where it's cold even on a hot day, and you take note of which way the sun goes.) Been doing this for nearly 35 years with various dogs. Better to leave them at home, obviously, but it IS possible if you have to eg go out for a day. Ddog likes the car and feels safe in there. Sometimes she asks to go in it at home, if it's noisy or we have visitors. It's in the garage where it's cold inside - never gets the sun.

I would never leave my dog in the car even though it has a dog mode.
We avoid situations where its necessary and if we did a longer journey one of us waitied with the dog while the other had a loo/food break and then we swapped over. He is 9 and has never been left in a car

Why are you ignoring all the people wisely telling you NOT to leave your dog in the car and only responding to those advising about the bloody locking of it????
Dogs Die in Hot AND WARM Cars!!!! They have fur and cannot sweat, only pant!
2/3 mins at this time of year without air con on (or air coming through window WHILST CAR IS MOVING), and they'll be unconscious!!!!

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN ANY VEHICLE!!!! Even with all 4 windows open fully, if the car is stationary with no air con on then it will still kill your dog!!!!!

DiscoBeat · 16/08/2024 10:40

We never ever leave the dog in the car!

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 16/08/2024 10:43

@HauntedbyMagpies I'm not ignoring, I have thanked them. I also said thanks for the advice in my post. What else can I say, I asked for advice and i got it.

At this time of year I would not leave my dog alone in a car for any reason or any length of time. Dog's can become very ill in just minutes.

Asmalldog · 18/08/2024 13:57

A dog buggy/ trailer might help, such as the innopet sporty or similar. That way your dog can hop in once she gets tired or too overwhelmed and you can continue walking. Might even help your dog's nervousness as she can observe her surroundings from a place where she feels safe and comfortable.
