Collar of shame

My boy has a cut paw. He's got antibiotics, pain relief and the dreaded collar of shame.
He's very stressed about the cone. Panting, shaking, refusing to move, eat or drink. DH took it off him after about 8 hours and DDog whizzed outside - wee poop and drank 2 bowls of water.
Do you think he'll get used to the cone??
He's going to be with just one person from Friday for 3 days, I'm thinking taking off and trying to get it back on on your own is going to be challenging/ impossible ( he's a big fidgety dog)
Or should we just leave it on 24/7 and hope he calms down. Or risk him licking his paw. It's the not drinking I'm concerned about especially cos he's drooling and panting ( which he never does normally)

Poor wee soul. They don’t like those things.
It shouldn’t be that difficult to get on and off - I assume it’s on a collar? I just held a treat in front of it and dog stuck his head through to get the treat.

But, sorry to be obtuse, but does it stop him getting to his paw ? How about, instead of the cone, use a sock over his paw and tape it on with medical tape which won’t hurt him.? I find DH’s socks useful for that sort of thing - I have labs.
A child’s sock would work better if you have such.

They would be a postive boon if lecherous men had to wear them. Panting or not.

We use a rubber ring. You can buy them at pets at home. Far more comfortable.

Inflatable ones are so much better...
As modelled here by our ddog recovering from massive cancer survey...

Have you got Amazon prime, order a donut ring instead.

Sunflowers098 · 14/08/2024 22:24

Vet thought donut wouldn't stop him getting to his paw 😢

We call it the cone of bravery in my house. We don't cone-shame 😉

Sunflowers098 · 15/08/2024 08:41

@Isometimeswonder love that!

My boy is going to be deknackered next week so I have been luring him into the cone with treats and making a real fuss of him. You could still do this, several times a day for several times.

GuppytheCat · 16/08/2024 14:56

If you raise the water bowl up, would he be able to stick the cone over it to drink?

Our pup ended up in an improbably huge cone for a cut paw, so you have my sympathy. She did seem to adapt to it after a day or two.

I would have thought being so stressed he can't eat or drink is worse than the risk of him maybe licking his paw a bit.

Our dog has had a few paw injuries over the years and we never used a cone. I would go for vet wrap over the foot if possible?
