Dog(selectively) refusing walks

Noodge · 13/08/2024 15:21

I WFH four or five days a week, differing hours.

Dog will always walk with me if I take her first thing in the morning or lunchtime at work.

If I go to take her out after work (5/6/7/8pm) she absolutely will not get out of the car, if I can get her in it to go further afield, and often will not leave the house at all. She'll have her ears back, cower, disappear down the cellar or under the table so I can't get her. If I get her IN the car to our usual walking spot (walking distance from my house but a nicer walk if I drive to it if that makes sense) again, ears back, gloomy look on face, anchoring herself into the car so that I can't get her out until I absolutely DRAG her, and I am afraid of hurting her (plus it isn't easy, she's just under 7stone!).

She used to love coming to the gym with me, but recently if I take her there she'll refuse to get out of the car-this has meant I've had to come home! It's too hot to leave her in the car plus a bit of a dodgy area there.

She LOVES coming to the pub with me. My reason for writing this thread is, I am off work for a few days now and I have just driven to our usual walking spot with her, wouldn't get out, tried another further afield, wouldn't get out and then I thought I'd go to the pub and have a drink and raed my book, no chance she'll not get out there! But she wouldn't.

I've recently had to drop her off at my Mum's (where she LEAPT out of the car at!) because she wouldn't get out to walk and wouldn't get out at home! and I wanted to go to the gym.

So much for dogs keeping you fit!

I've had her checked at the vet very recently. Nothing wrong. No fleas. Recently wormed. 8 years old and has always ran for miles with me, walked no problem, giddy as hell, very playful.

Any ideas? I am stumped!

An 8 year old large breed dog will very likely have arthritis. Only x-rays can confirm this. Or you could just trial pain meds. Jumping in and out of cars becomes painful as they get older and should be avoided. You might need to get a ramp and shorten the walks. 8 is elderly for a large breed.

Thank you for everyone's input. It is worrying. I went for a 3 mile run with her this morning that she was very happy to do.

Not around her meal time usually. I agree her body language spells 'scared'.

The reason (or one of the main reasons) I drive to where I walk her is so that she doesn't have to walk on pavement-I live near a country park, all mud and grass and dusty footpaths.

If I walk with her to there, ironically she's fine (if she'll leave the house which she mostly will) it is just when I drive there with her she'll refuse to exit the car! But again, never on a morning. Evening she'll refuse (as in the case of starting this thread) a bit later on in the day she's began refusing too!

@BeBopBeBop yes-it does make you realise just how short their lives are doesn't it. Sad

I asked the vet specifically about arthritis and he said definitely not, she's fine, maybe stiffer than a younger dog that's all but that's perfectly normal in any animal (me included Grin).

I do walk her in different places, as it is just me and my dog I try to 'do' things with her, it just isn't practical on a day I am working. There's also a park down the road which I'd like to go to more but for years she's refused to get out of the car there! It has a bit of a reputation for teens hanging about there smoking etc, and some locals refuse to walk there due to apparent nefarious activity but I haven't ever looked into it and the teens smoking thing wouldn't put me off-but dog just doesn't like that park at all!

@Potsnpotz the gym I go to is half in and half outside. It's an old bodybuilder's gym, It's very cold (even in this weather it is cool, which I thought dog would like and she definitely seemed to at first). It's also very quiet, only 50 members and most have their own keys at is is likely that one will turn up and nobody will be there. It isn't manned. There's an option to turn music on but the only time it is usually switched on is of an evening if it is 'busy' and by busy I mean about 6 guys in, lifting heavy together. I have a key and during the day I am rarely not alone there-if I am not it is usually one other member. A lot of us take our dogs in-although if others are there I always have popped my head in and asked if everyone is okay with it before I do

The first couple of times I took her, she'd just sit next to whatever I was using, seemingly very chilled out, enjoying the cold floor-then I'd move onto the next thing and she'd come with me. She seemed very happy there-alas after that, again she refused to leave the car. Obviously if I was a member of a loud, busy, chain type gym I'd not take a dog there.

I am going to do what is suggested by a few of you, take the dog back to the vet and ask for some pain trial medication.

@sunsetsandboardwalks I really don't think she's struggling to exit the car though. At my Mum's that time, she LEAPT out of the car like a 6 month old pup and same when I take her to the pub most of the time. Plus I drive an old sports car-anyone over 5'6 struggles to exit it as it is practically on the floor!

@sunsetsandboardwalks he checked her paws and eyes-not sure about hearing come to think of it!

@FinallyMovingHouse those dogs are known for being trained to know their own mind aren't they! I love them.

Mine is a mongrel-part timber wolf part husky part malamute. I think someone thought 'hmm what'd happen if I stuck the most naughty/stubborn breeds altogether...'

She's reluctant to get out of the car at the gym at any time @fortheloveofcollies love-I've tried day and eve although I don't want to again as if she won't i'll have to come all the way back!

I use the car for morning walks too-It's quicker so better for before work and not as boring a walk. Can't think of anything that's happened or anything different. I Agree, I'd love to get to the bottom of it!

@Thunderboltandlightningveryveryfrightening part husky! But will not go out after dark at all unless It's to the pub!

This would really concern me and I'd be wanting a second opinion. Stiffness in older dogs almost always means problems of some kind. Coupled with reluctance to get out of the car after a long morning walk/run - well, it screams pain.

It's before, not after. She's never been reluctant to get out of the car upon returning home after a walk.

I would break the routine for a bit OP and stop taking her in the car as she's possibly developing a bit of a habitual hangup here that is not closely associated with anything in particular.

My dog refuses to get out at one stretch because it's a riverside walk where bikes pass by closely which he doesn't like. After a few attempts he started generalising his refusal to other places as well. So we stopped with the car altogether for a bit and never went back to that (lovely 😥) riverside location. After a few days I reintroduced the car again, starting with focusing on his favourite places and also with a nice treat for getting out of the car.

It seemed to break up the habit that he was beginning to develop and no issues now.

This would worry me too. Old age is not an illness it is not normal to be stiff at an old age unless there is physical pain.

A dog jumping out when they are excited eg at your Mums does not mean there is no pain.Just adrenalin has disgused it.

See the video of a collie with a broken leg still herding sheep.

Less pain in the morning as less exercise and less chance to stiffen up. More uncomfortable as the day goes on so less desire to exercise.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 15/08/2024 21:41

@Noodge I meant reluctance on the second walk of the day, suggesting the exercise from walk one has caused pain or inflammation.

Noodge · 16/08/2024 18:38

Good advice everyone, thank you. We went on a run yesterday, all fine-I had a dog walker take her out today, fine to go then and I took her for a quick walk on my break. I'll not try to take her out after I finish work. I think I feel guilty if she only has one walk a day, like she'll get bored! But dogs are individuals too aren't they and there's no point persevering if she doesn't want to.

I will take her to a different vet for a second opinion and a more thorough examination too though. I'm not a huge runner but I like to do a couple of miles a few times a week-and if she's in pain and just going along with it for me that's unfair.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this @Noodge ? Mine has recently started behaving similarly, she’s only coming up on 5 and is a very different breed, loves it when we’re actually out and just as mad as she ever was but resistant to the getting ready and going out transitions.
