Emergency Vet or an appointment tommorrow

Firstly I never thought I would need to start a vet or not post because I'm usually straight at the vets but I would love some advice.

DDog is a small terrier . He's a rescue and he has muscle atrophy that causes his left side to be weak: he is in weekly physio and hydro under vets guidance . He hasn't swam in a week or so for reference. This is just background info.

Both dogs were not settling tonight. We have had decorators in so the house is all upside down and also it's so hot.

DDOg has been his usual self today but obviously it's hot. We have kept them cool in the house.

DDogs both sleep at the bottom of our bed and due to the heat DH moved to the spare room. DDog decided he wanted to be with DH and about 5 mins after he joined him I went into talk to him and we both noticed DDog suddenly shake it felt like whole body. I didn't look at his head as we both just instantly called him and DH went to him and he snapped out of it looked at us both like we were nuts and went back to his usual full alert self. Whole thing over in less than 15 seconds, we wondered if he had rolled on his back and got stuck but also it felt different

He's since been outside with DH had a drink been to the loo and been very happy and content, begging for a drink and wandering round happily; he was never groggy he came straight back like it was a dream but we don't think he was asleep, we are both at a loss as to if we rush to the emergency vet or call first thing? Would love any thoughts.

Edited to add he wasn't begging for a drink I meant he was begging for a treat / snack

could The dog have been dreaming? I’d wait and keep an eye.

So to us it feels like the chance of him falling asleep that deeply in a minute or so seems unlikely. He still seems really happy. It was weird. I read heatstroke can cause a seizure but he has zero other heatstroke symptoms

Possibly. I feel like doggies are very good at telling us if they’re poorly in their own way. Doesn’t sound like an emergency but if you think what you saw is an emergency, then ring.

QuestionableMouse · 12/08/2024 23:12

If he's well in himself, eating and drinking then I wouldn't panic yet. Keep an eye on him and see how he is tomorrow.

My dog frightened me doing similar. Later realised he was reacting to a fly in the room that kept bothering him!

Fiddlerdragon · 12/08/2024 23:17

How old is the dog? While it’s worrying, there’s literally nothing a vet can do for him at almost midnight over an episode that lasted only seconds. He’s back to normal already so at most they’ll advice observations, and you can keep an eye on him more at home than a vet will overnight

Calmestofallthechickens · 12/08/2024 23:22

If he’s now acting normally, then I would wait until the morning.

If it was heatstroke seizing he wouldn’t come round spontaneously and be his normal self - he would be very obviously unwell.

DDog is 7 we think. Thanks all. I really honestly appreciate the comments.

DH now set himself up in the garden with DDOg as they are both cooler and happier there.

I will book a vet appointment as soon as they open .

I think that may be a bit of an over reaction tbh. Just keep an eye on him today and see if it happens again.

Thank you. DDog was fine for the rest of the night and absolutely fine today. DH will watch him today like a hawk,

I still think I want him checked over but maybe less of an emergency now.

I hope your dog is okay.

Most vets won't do anything for a one-off suspected fit with no real other symptoms - they'll just tell you to watch and wait. By all means bring the dog in for a general check over if you're concerned, but I wouldn't expect too much.

dogworrier123 · 13/08/2024 16:33

Thank you everyone!

He's been fine all day but I have now spoken to the vets and he has a health check booked in on Thursday ( he's on the plan so he gets one anyway I have just brought it forward)
