Puppy food! Help!

My puppy is 9 weeks old and came home last Thursday. From the off he has had very runny poo. He isn’t pooing excessively (about 3 times a day) but when he does it is water. Spoke to the vet who said it could be stress from coming home and to try chicken and rice for 3 days. He has now been on chicken and rice for 24 hours and is having solid poo. My question is what food do I put him on after day 3 of chicken and rice. Should I continue with the food the breeder sent with him or should I try him on something new. If so, what??? Any good puppy foods for sensitive stomachs? He was on wet food. Would dry be better?

Vet is 100% right that it's likely nerves and so I'd revert back to the original food after three days - that will be what the breeder weened him on.

If he reverts to runny poo's again, then you'll just have to hunt around for something that does work for him. As with humans, all dogs are individuals, so what works for some dogs won't work for yours and visa versa - so any suggestions you get could be as unhelpful as they are helpful.

What is the breed and size of the pup? You may be better switching to a dry food/kibble but soaking it with boiling water then allowing it to cool (or cool it with goats milk).
If you can get to Pets at Home or look at their website, their brand Wainwrights does some really good dry puppy foods for sensitive stomachs.

Edited to add that you obviously need to make a gradual switch if changing what the breeder started the puppy on...

If he’s doing well on chicken and rice look for a complete food that contains chicken and rice (and make sure chicken is listed first and the percentage and not just derivatives of meat, so no pro plan/pedigree etc)

The puppy is an Italian greyhound so small and willowy. Currently too small for all collars (even kitten collars) and harnesses.

Thanks for the advice. My adult dog (Labrador) was on wainwrights as a pup but she has a stomach of steal and can eat anything.

Oh how beautiful! This breed has such elegance.

FWIW we've always fed a mix of wet, dry and home cooked foods but you're clearly an experienced dog owner so am sure you'll soon find what works best for your new little chap.

I believe Italian Greyhounds are a breed prone to sensitive stomachs, I'd gradually reintroduce the food from the breeder, mix a little with the rice/chicken then keep increasing the amount of dog food when you know he's doing ok.

I'd also get a tube of Pro Kolin in too, it's brilliant at settling tummy's and firming up poos.

Hope puppy is in the mend soon.

Give Oralade to help hydration too.

James well beloved does a puppy food based on chicken and rice- my ten week old is on it.

Thanks everyone. Have ordered some Pro Kolin for pick up tomorrow and I will look at the food recommendations.
