Dpup (9 months) got poorly about 2 1/2 weeks ago. He started with vomiting and diarrhoea and as things got steadily worse he got was diagnosed with pancreatitis and kept in at the vet hospital over night. They sent him home and he was back to eating his food but after 2 days the d&v started again. He then stopped eating altogether. We woke up one morning and he couldn't move, we got him out of his crate and he was dragging his behind and couldn't stand for more than a few seconds. Back to emergency vet we went and they said he had a very high temp and sounded like he had respiratory problems, they diagnosed a lung infection and gave him new antibiotics. Took him home and he seemed to perk up for the afternoon a little bit. Next day still no eating and we couldn't get him to have his antibiotics as he would just vomit them straight back up again.

Back to vets again. They kept him in on iv fluids for the day and did an X-ray as they started to think he may have a foreign body in his stomach. They said the X-ray came back clear and said he had eaten about a spoonful of food so they sent him home again (this was Friday afternoon). Since we got him home he has eaten less than a quarter of a tin of his food and has been sick over 10 times. He's not pooping much as he's obviously not eating.

I am honestly at a loss as to what we do now! Obviously I'm going to ring the vet again in the morning but they just seem to keep fobbing us off and sending him home without any definitive answer as to what is wrong. He's so lethargic bless him, he normally is a hyper playful puppy but all he does is sit on our lap at the moment or sleep. He's lost 2kg in the last 5 days and obviously that's going to get worse as he won't eat.

Hoping someone on here may have experienced something similar and know what we can do!

Honestly, I wouldn’t wait until the morning. I’d be straight down an emergency vet tonight.

Tell them exactly what you have written above.

What are his stools like?

loudbatperson · 11/08/2024 19:03

I don't have a clue what's wrong, but I would be trying a different vet, today if at all possible.

I think this needs a second opinion. The poor mite it really sick and it doesn't sound like the current vet has a clue what's up, so another pair of eyes is definitely worth it.

Pancreatitis can be caused from a high fat diet. Could it be getting into the bin or eating something in your garden?
When my puppy was a similar age and had diarrhoea, they said to stick to a bland diet till it improved. Plain, cooked white rice and chicken meat with no fat, then once the D&V improved, to only slowly add small amounts of dog food back in. Did they say to just continue feeding regular dog food?

We also had to give her something like this: https://www.petsathome.com/product/protexin-veterinary-pro-kolin-for-dogs-and-cats-paste/P4120. It can help improve the diarrheoa.
I'm afraid I dont know what your pup had, but hopefully it gets better soon.

Mindymomo · 11/08/2024 19:09

Whenever my dog has had D&V I always straightaway put him on a bland diet of chicken and rice or plain boiled cod and rice, along with a spoonful of tinned pumpkin. I agree you may need to go back to vets again.

bouncingboundless · 11/08/2024 19:10

Sorry I should have said they put him straight on a special vet food as soon as they diagnosed pancreatitis. But he won't eat it anyway, we've even tried just a plain little bit of chicken but he won't eat anything.

@Mindymomo

why the tinned pumpkin?

Anewuser · 11/08/2024 19:12

I wouldn’t be so worried about eating than drinking. How’s he drinking, especially in this hot weather?

Ponkpinkpink15 · 11/08/2024 19:13

@bouncingboundless

I'd have him at a different emergency vet's now, one that does manned overnight care.

Dearg · 11/08/2024 19:16

i agree with emergency vet. Ask for a pancreatic snap test.

My dog had it earlier this year. He was on very strong painkillers plus IV fluids for several days before he was able to eat. The overnight vets discharged him as soon as he ate and he ended up at our own vet shortly after. If that’s what it is, it takes time.

bouncingboundless · 11/08/2024 19:20

Thanks everyone where we live we don't have great access to lots of different vets but I will see if I can find anything. I feel like they just keep sending him home whilst he's still poorly and just telling us hopefully he will get better but nothing is changing and he's losing more and more weight

Aw poor thing, keep us posted on how he gets on. I fed my dog Chappie original when she was feeling unwell, it's low fat and fish rather than meat. I appreciate if he won't eat anything that's no help though.

bouncingboundless · 11/08/2024 19:41

By some miracle I may have posted too soon! We've just put him his food out again like we've been doing everyday and my Dd (7) sat next to him and he ate the whole thing! Obviously I'm expecting that he may be sick again as it's the first time he has eaten properly in 2 weeks but I'm keeping absolutely everything crossed that this may be the start of his recovery!!

Also is it really sad that we were all really cheering him on when he ate as we've been so bloody worried about him! Haha

Dearg · 11/08/2024 19:43

🤞🤞Good news! Hope he is on the mend op.

Hydration is good so if you can, pick up some Oralade or Bone broth to keep his fluids up for a few days.

Sunburnisrareinscotland · 11/08/2024 19:44

Blockage missed by xray? Dodgy ate a flip flop. Passed the lot over a very worrying week end.....
Same ddog also ate 10 cod portions... Raw... And in plastic...
Actual robot ddog I think....

bouncingboundless · 11/08/2024 19:46

@Sunburnisrareinscotland oh no really?
We are starting to think we may have to muzzle him for walks (not sure if that's ok or if it's cruel) as he eats absolutely anything he sees on walks. Even when being watched and on a short lead he can get things in his mouth before we even have a chance of stopping him. Obviously the vets have said he can't eat anything other than his special diet now because of the pancreatitis. He's a Jack Russel though so they are like mini eating machines!

Sunburnisrareinscotland · 11/08/2024 19:50

Same ddog also ate a wooden chip fork before I could grab the end... Muzzle isn't the worst thing. Our rotty knew muzzle =good walk... Sniffing is a ddogs window shopping trip. Make the walks stimulating ones with lots of smells to distract.. Our park has a herby nature garden. Ours love it. And flinch at the statue ddog every single time!! A new route can change mindset of foraging for food also.

bouncingboundless · 11/08/2024 19:55

@Sunburnisrareinscotland we've tried going on lots of different walks, we are lucky to live in the countryside so there are plenty of new places to always take him but he seems to think walks = food Blush. Whilst he is recovering I will probably try a muzzle just so he doesn't end up eating something that will make him poorly again

Toodaloobaloo · 11/08/2024 20:02

I’d be questioning the possibility of a foreign object again. Xray didn’t pick it up with ours but luckily our vet was thorough. Same symptoms as you described and wasn’t getting better, so they went in with a magic eye and found a piece of plastic. Our boy was at death’s door but luckily he pulled through thanks to the vet.

bouncingboundless · 11/08/2024 20:05

@Toodaloobaloo so glad your boy is better now. That's really good advice though so I will ask the vet about this again tomorrow

A doggy walker initially diagnosed with pancreatitis but turned out to be bacterial infection. Worth checking. Our girl has pancreatitis and a mare on walks. Just have to keep her on a lead now.

Nextdoor55 · 12/08/2024 08:28

If he's eating lots of rubbish on walks it's possible that he ate some poo or something that has been toxic for him. If that's the case he's had a lucky escape because our dog didn't make it after she ate cat poo.
Definitely keep a very close eye on him when walking.
Glad he's perked up though. Good sign

OldSpeclkledHen · 12/08/2024 21:57

@bouncingboundless how's your boy today?
Chappie is good for unsettled tummy, looks cheap and disgusting, but it's the only thing my TerrorX can tolerate

Hope all is well 🤞
