Our 6 year old lab has been unwell today. He poo'd and wee'd overnight indoors which is very unusual for him. He went for a walk this morning and ate breakfast but has since vomited his complete breakfast up (just looked like food)
He hasn't wanted to go for a walk this afternoon but ate some chicken and rice I cooked him.
He's quite lethargic. I'm so sad for him.
Would you ring emergency vet? Baring in mind it's miles away and not sure I'd get him in the car!
Or watch and wait and see what he's like tomorrow?
Thankyou, first time dog mum x

I think I'd ring the vet for advice.

It might just be a stomach bug but it might be something more serious.

Is there any chance he has eaten something he shouldn't have?

HappiestSleeping · 10/08/2024 18:04

It depends. Is there any chance that he has eaten something else that he shouldn't? Is there a chance his breakfast was off? Is he drinking water?

I'd try him with a short walk and see how he does. Since it is Sunday tomorrow, you have little difference between calling now or in the morning, so I'd be tempted to call now to see what they say.

What was the colour and consistency of his poo?

hockityponktas · 10/08/2024 18:06

I would see how he is tomorrow. Did he keep the chicken and rice down?
Maybe a bit more chicken and rice and some broth if you have any? I’d let him rest and not take for a walk.
Is he drinking water and weeing?

Bigstuffypillow · 10/08/2024 18:16

He's a Lab so could have easily eaten something he shouldn't in the park.
I don't think his breakfast was off, it's just dry biscuits.
His poo overnight was soft but not runny, he did have a runnier poo yesterday tho.
He has kept the chicken and rice down and is drinking and weeing, its just the lethargy that's really unusual
Thanks for your replies

I'd leave him until tomorrow if it were mine. Mine also eats anything, so I feel your pain. Fortunately, he seems to have a cast iron constitution though.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 10/08/2024 18:26

If he's eating and drinking, I would just keep an eye on him at home I think.

Stick with small portions of chicken and rice, and don't let him gulp down loads of water in case it makes him sick. Lots of rest and I wouldn't walk him tomorrow either.

I'm sure he'll be fine.

MsBridie · 10/08/2024 18:27

Does your pet insurance have a "video vet" service? I'd do that tonight.

I was just about to say this exact thing!

Bigstuffypillow · 10/08/2024 18:56

Oh not sure about video vet, I will have a look.

With Pet Plan, pay a fortune but can't see anything about video call.

I'd definitely ring the vet.
I've had dog dramas today myself, which resulted in an emergency dash to the vet because he was suddenly unwell.
I feel a bit happier after being reassured by the vet and although I'm nervous about his results (we also found lumps and I asked for them to be biopsied and for him to have a full blood test), I know that if something is wrong, we have a better chance.
Plus, he's now on pain relief that he needed so he's comfier.

Wishing your dog a speedy recovery.

Ohdearyme72 · 10/08/2024 19:25

I'd ring vet for advice.

ScottBakula · 10/08/2024 19:34

Personally I wouldn't feed him chicken and rice , I know this iscthe 'go to' when dogs ( or people) are sick but for now I'd not feed him anything.
Give his digestive system a chance to get rid of anything that's causing problems and then rest for a bit.
Humans know when it's not a good idea to eat, unfortunately dogs , esp labs don't seem to understand the concept of not eating !
Obviously make sure he has access to water but only small amounts ( ½ a pint ) at a time . He can have as many ½ pints as he wants , just not gulped all at the same time . This will also allow you to monitor his fluid intake.
If you have a appropriate thermometer take his temp , it should be 38 / 39 .

A call to the vets wouldn't be a bad idea, they may be able to advise more . It will also give them the heads up just in case you need to get him to them quickly

Bigstuffypillow · 10/08/2024 19:48

Thank you,

I only gave him a tiny bit of chicken/rice, nowhere near his usual amount.
He won't be having anything else, will see what he's like tomorrow.
He had drunk some water but not loads.
Our vet is closed so would have to go through the emergency vet of needed.
@AddictedToBooks I hope your dog makes a full recovery, they are certainly a worry!

What colour are his gums? Any part of him swollen (snout, ears etc)? Is he panting? Pacing?

Or is he just very quiet and being sick?

Bigstuffypillow · 10/08/2024 21:18

He's not being sick now, was sick once a few hours after breakfast.
Can't see any swollen bits, he was panting on his walk earlier but not panting at rest. Resp rate around 40
He hates his mouth being touched, stems from a vet visit a while back, but from what i can see the gums are pink.

He’s probably just a bit under the weather then! Hopefully he’s back to full strength today - just make sure he has lots of cool areas to go to (ideally in front of a fan).

Swollen gums/snout etc often means serious allergic reaction (and sickness and lethargy usually comes with it too!) - and immediate vet visit - so always one to check!

Thankyou and yes they are a worry, but worth it.
How is your boy today?

pilates · 11/08/2024 12:45

How is he today?
My dog had a bad bout of gastroenteritis and got dehydrated which made him very poorly but the fact your boy is eating and drinking sounds positive.

Bigstuffypillow · 11/08/2024 19:01

Thanks for all your messages.
I saw him on the camera at midnight ,(he has his own room at night) he was fidgeting about and I went to him. There was a pile and I couldn't decide if it was vomit or poo, it looked liked the chicken and rice he'd had 7 hours before.
Today hes definitely not so lethargic, we haven't taken him for a walk (it's really hot today) but he's chased a pigeon in the garden and ran to the door when the bell went which he wouldn't of done yesterday.
He's had chicken and rice and ate it enthusiastically, and he's drinking water. He's had 1 runny poo today.
He's not 100% and still looks sad, but definitely better than Yesterday🥰

@Bigstuffypillow that's a good update! Hopefully you'll see another big improvement!!

labs are a nightmare!! I would have just watched over him as you did, as he was drinking water, weeing & breathing ok.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/08/2024 20:37

Sounds like he's just eaten or licked 🤢 something he shouldn't have. Dogs are pretty gross, glad he's looking better op.

Bigstuffypillow · 14/08/2024 22:15

Doggo had been fine, although poo not totally solid, sorry tmi
Out of the blue he was sick today, but acting totally normal 🤷‍♀️

Mine was sick in the night a few days ago. I think I said earlier up the thread that he had a habit of eating all sorts of gross stuff, so I'm amazed it doesn't happen more often.

I just spread his food out during the day and kept an eye on him and he's fine now.
