Breeder reselling dog

We have seen a 2 year old dog being sold by the original breeder. Dog has been returned to them 'through no fault of her own'. Is it OK for the breeder to resell a dog, they are asking several hundred pounds. Dog looks good, mum still in home etc.

Genuine question from non dog owner.
Why wouldn't it be ok?

PigeonFeatherInMyChair · 06/08/2024 11:36

If the breeder gave her away (or charged less than the going rate) she risks the dog going to the wrong person for the wrong reasons.

It's a bit 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'.

Why wouldn’t they charge? They will have had costs incurred keeping the dog with them while looking for a new home, in some cases vaccinations / neutering/ vet treatment as well as food.

A lot of breeders will ask owners to surrender back to them, so they can place the dog themselves, and know who it's going to.

Usually yes, they will charge a fee again, as pp poster said, to ensure quality homes etc.

Remember - the breeder will be paying for the keep of the dog during the rehoming period, possibly working with training etc. It's not free to them either.

We got a beautiful returned dog from a breeder. She was 5 and the owners had a drastic change of circumstances. We paid the normal going rate for the breed and got all her papers.

Thanks, that was my feeling. It feels geniine. Lots of posts on here warning about some dodgy people selling dogs so being cautious.

The breeder must have taken back the dog, which I would feel is a positive. If they were not concerned about their dogs they would not have taken it back - it can be very difficult to rehome an older dog. Much easier to sell puppies.

If it’s the breeder reselling I’d be really pleased, actually. Means it’s a responsible breeder who has take the dog back when the original owners could no longer keep it!

TBH I’d call several hundreds pound cheap for what is presumably a well trained, young, and healthy dog. Rescues usually ask for more for dogs that have serious issues…
