My Dog wants to eat like a Queen. Help.

My Llasa is extremely fussy and has yet again gone off her food and won’t eat her wet evening meal. She suffers with morning sickness if her stomach is empty from not eating the evening before. For this reason, I end up giving her boiled chicken before bed to prevent the vomiting.

I feed butternut box and it is being wasted daily; it’s an expensive waste. I’ve also tried different dog, natures harvest, natures menu, raw, Edgar and cooper, Lily’s kitchen and a few others. She just sniffs and walks away or she’ll seem happy for a while and then does the same thing.

I thought about switching to dry but how easy will this be when she has been wet fed her whole life? (She’s 6). I’m at my wits end with this.

Any recommendations for a good quality, highly rated food for a fussy dog which won’t result in nuclear poop?

Sorry no advice but I'm following as my sister's dog is similar. He's a mixed breed including Lhasa, Shi Tzu and Tibetan Spaniel. She just has to keep trying different things till he eats. He does prefer high meat content meals but bit like a cat, one day something is fine, next day has decided he doesn't want it. Surprisingly the vet says he is only marginally underweight and is in good health over all, so he seems to be surviving. Latest thing he is eating is Natures Menu freeze dried raw kibble.

Have you tried Butchers? It's really good quality for a supermarket food and I've never known a dog not to like it.

Kosenrufugirl · 04/08/2024 16:48

Our dog loves chicken liver. It's about 50 p on sale from the frozen section from supermarket. He also gets our roast dinner leftovers, would prefer the above any day to any dog food. God knows what goes into dog food if dogs seem to hate it so much

Further to the earlier message.... we got our dog at 5 months, the previous owners we were sticking to the rules and only feeding dog food. So it's not an acquired taste

I've just changed mine over to Gentle, it's a cold pressed dry food. She'd gone off her previous dry (arden grange). She really likes it and it smells a bit like chow mein through the bag! I put a topper of either Butchers or fresh chicken or mackerel.

@sunsetsandboardwalks We've tried Butchers (a favourite of my last dog) but wasn't keen. Will try again though.

I know this isn't my thread so hope I'm not being cheeky but thanks for all the suggestions. We're going to try these.

I have two Lhasa's. One will eat absolutely anything including all types of raw vegetables but the other one is a nightmare. They are both dry food fed, with the bowl being left down all day. However 9/10 they will eat when we've gone to bed, presumably because then they know there is nothing else on offer.
We've had to cut out any type of treat/human food for the picky one. This is because even if you give him the tiniest bit of chicken, he will then starve himself until he's sick. Yellow bile as he's so hungry. You can hear his stomach grumbling, his food is in his bowl but he's just holding out for chicken. Longest he's gone is 3 days.
It's a shame as we do have food waste which we give to the non-fussy one, but we have to shut the other one out to stop the starvation process. We feel awful giving one and not the other but it's the only thing to ensure he will eat his normal food.

My dog doesn't do well on high end dog food or raw food, it seems to upset his tum, we tried lots of different kinds & dry food too, burns was highly recommended to us but it gave him an upset stomach and very smelly gas. We ended up trying Burgess Supadog dry food and he thrives on it, empty bowl every meal and no smelly butt or messy poop! They make a sensitive range as well so might be worth trying that .
Someone mentioned pure dog food on here and we had two dogs that also liked that very much and did well on on it.

We have a fussy Lhasa, and she was refusing to eat anything other than chicken and ham. She is old and she refused to eat anything but ham for about 4 days. In the end, I put down her dog food, and it stayed there until she very grumpily gave up. I have told everyone that she is no longer allowed anything but dog food due to her refusing it once she gets a treat. Thankfully, she is now eating, but tonight, my husband was tempted to treat her with some steak pie. Thankfully, I caught him before he did it Grin

itsallabitofamystery · 04/08/2024 19:54

@ShortColdandGrey my other half tries to sneak mine treats, but he works away and it's me who has to deal with the vomit when the dog goes on hunger strike afterwards!

It's the most disgusting food ever, but Chappie is easily digestible, my Terrier X was doing phenomenal amounts of poops on a walk... it was ridiculous (was was on Orijen)
Chappie was recommended on here, he still poops 2/3 times on a walk ... but it's much better than before...
Hope you get something sorted, they are such a worry

Westiegirl3 · 04/08/2024 21:10

As my name suggests I have a 16 year old Westie who's been a fussy eater since I got him at 10 weeks old. He's now on a really strict and expensive Royal Canine diet but during his life I've tried to keep him on wainwrights wet trays, when this fails I put him on chappie for a few weeks and then switch back as recommended by our vets.

Years has worked well for me and cheaper than butternut
