Anyone had experience of looking after a dog with pancreatitis?

Ddog has been poorly since Saturday with sickness and diarrhoea. We thought he had probably eaten something he shouldn't have (he's only 9 months and will eat anything he can sniff out!) so we cut his diet down to boiled rice and plain chicken. Things got worse and he stopped drinking so we took him to the vets who have kept him in on antibiotics and a drip due to dehydration. They have called to say his blood tests have come back showing pancreatitis. They've advised that he will need to be on a special diet and we will have to be really careful that he doesn't eat any human food at all (this is going to be the most difficult as we have young dc who are always dropping food or leaving it in the dogs reach).

Just wondering if any one has any advice or tips to help keep him healthy? Apparently once they have it it can keep coming back so we obviously want to be as vigilant as we can to keep him as safe as possible

Our older cocker spaniel had this twice when she was younger, both times from eating a bunch of stuff she shouldn't have done despite what we thought were adequate precautions! She recovered with supportive care, with no lasting effects and no chronic pancreatitis. Now 13.5. I know it's v hard with young children, but the main thing really is to keep him on the dietary straight and narrow, especially while he's recovering from this episode. Fx he makes a full recovery x

@Seaside1234 thank you, I'm glad to hear your Ddog has recovered, that gives me hope that it will hopefully just be a blip and not something he suffers with long term.

My cocker spaniel had this as well when he was quite young. I began feeding him raw and he didn’t have another bout of it for quite a long time until he discovered a half eaten kebab in the hedge and wolfed it back before I realised what he’d got. Little devil.

@Iheartmysmart ah that's really interesting as we have been looking in to raw food for him. The vet said she will give us more info on what food he needs tomorrow so I'll ask her about that.

Mine has always had Burns dried and been fine with it - raw food wasn't really a thing when she was ill, and no-one ever suggested she needed anything special, just to try to stop her eating alllll the human food! Fx your wee guy will be fine

One of mine had it. The main thing is to stick to a low fat diet. We used to get a special kibble from the vet which he did fine on. Sorry can’t remember the brand as it’s a good few years ago now.

Not me but DSis' DDog had it. The Vet recommended tins of Chappie and the pancreatitis never returned.

If the young DC are always dropping food or leaving it around, could you make them eat at the Dining table?

Our cocker had this. He had to be on a very low-fat veterinary diet (we used Royal Canin tins), which worked really well initially. It was eventually discovered by a specialist after he went into a persistent flare that he had a rare immune-mediated form. It responded well to steroids and he was on a very low dose of prednisone as well as the low-fat diet thereafter.
