Conjunctivitis in dog eye

RedRobyn2021 · 29/07/2024 07:19

My step dad uses cooled teabags on his dogs eyes when they have it and it's always cleared up

I don't know why but I feel nervous doing this too, just worried it won't work but equally it's a fortune every time I need to take my lab to the vets

Can anyone recommend any eye drops I can get quickly?

Only had this once and I took used cooled teabags. I was skeptical but they worked a treat.

I second the tea bags, we use it on our cats, dog and rabbits. If ots not clearing up after a day or 2 I'd try something else. You can buy eye washes from pets at home, amazon so they might have something

Went to the vet once with one dog as he had a mildly irritated eye and they gave me a tube that was an inch long and would last for seven days. It was £18.50 and did absolutely nothing.

I bought this and keep it in our dog first aid box and it's brilliant. Works immediately.

GoldenEye is a non-prescription anti-biotic with the disadvantage that it need applying 6 times a day.
Isathal is a prescription anti-biotic that only needs twice a day application but it's prescription only.

Goldeneye is fine fine for dogs - we certainly never used it six times a day and it worked fine.

You can also get normal eye drops from the pharmacy but I forget the name - they're fine for dogs too.

OblivionAndBeyond · 29/07/2024 09:48

I use Pro Pooch eye wash and Goldeneye for small infections. I follow the instructions and use 6 times a day because the last thing you want to do is under dose antibiotics - that's the way to risk a more significant problem developing.

If that doesn't clear it within a few days then I go to the vet for Isathal.

My vet told me that human conjunctivitis drops are the same thing

sunsetsandboardwalks · 29/07/2024 10:01

You do have to remember though that the doseage on the packet for GoldenEye is for humans, not dogs.

Our vet recommended it twice a day which is what we've always done without issue.

Catchlock · 29/07/2024 10:06

Please be careful and make sure it is conjunctivitis. My sisters westie had what they thought was conjunctivitis which they treated with teabags and it don't clear up.
When they went to the vets she had an ulcer in her eye and now has very limited sight in that eye with terrible scaring.
I really think it's not worth skipping the vet.

I've started using teabags today and tbh her eyes look a lot better, they aren't even red anymore. I'll see what they're like tomorrow morning

Thanks for the advice

What do you do with the teabags?

What do you do with the teabags?

So i boil the kettle and put a tea bag with the freshly boiled hot water in a cup, leave to stand until room temperature and then squeeze excessive water out of tea bag and wipe the eye/eyes with the tea bag. The eye normally ends up tea stained. I don't actually drink tea but if I did I would use the tea bag from my cup of tea then place tea bag on saucer before adding milk/sugar to tea.
I do clean the eye of any gunk first with cooled boiled water and clean cotton pads, like you would a baby, only wiping the eye the once then using a fresh part or a new pad.

Thanks! I'd definitely drink the tea whilst waiting for the tea bag to cool, I always haul the bag out first before the milk goes in so OK on that bit. The dog has a black coat, so she won't notice the tea stains.

RenaSan antiseptic eye drops, available on amazon - it actually is a big squeezy bottle, easy to flush the eyes (no need to drop precisely). Can be used on dogs, cats, rabbits, all pets.

Cherrytart2 · 20/12/2024 11:47

Are RenaSan eye drops safe ro use on the cats without prescription
