Dog suddenly snoring loudly (and panting)

Hi, my 7 year old cavachon has started to snore like an articulated lorry.

She didn't do it until recently, maybe the last month. I thought she perhaps had reacted to pollen so waited it out but she's still as bad.

She snores even when she's not sound asleep, like dozing or even just sitting there, not always asleep.

And in the last fortnight she has wakened me at night panting and panting. I take her outside for air or to cool down (but I don't have heating on in this weather so it's really not overly warm) she pants and can sound distressed- I usually calm her down.

I'm wondering if I should call the vet or will they laugh at me? I know dogs snore, we had a lab who snored from a puppy, but this is sudden and a big change to her usual noises.

She sleeps on her bed in my room (along with our other dog who doesn't snore or pant)

Has anyone had this before? Thanks in advance

I don't have a dog now, but I would ring the vet - panting/shortness of breath in my old cat was a sign of heart trouble.

This happened to a cat of mine and unfortunately it was a sign of heart failure. Please get to vets as asap x

I had a Cavachon (the best dog ever) he could snore for England in fact I'm sure hom and DH were competing against each other for the loudest snore. He was also a terrible panter as he got older bit I think it was just how he was as was nothing the vet could find wrong. Later in life he was diabetic but that showed as extreme thirst and hunger. Get her checked out to set your mind at rest.

Thanks, I've an appt for tomorrow afternoon. I wad worried the vet would laugh but you've all reassured me he'll take it seriously.

The receptionist said snoring in itself isn't a concern but because it's new for her and the panting they'd be better seeing her.

Straight to the vets. Could be anything from cancer to collapsing lungs in a worst case scenario. Could also just be heat. But why risk it?

Rule of thumb: If you're worried enough to post on the Doghouse, you should ring the vet.

If one of my dogs was panting and sounded distressed, I wouldn't wait til tomorrow to see a vet.

She's not doing it all the time, mostly at night.

And I wish I lived where you lived as that's the vet squeezing me in tomorrow.

Thanks everyone, I'll update when we've been seen.

The vet checked her out and isn't concerned. He said her heart and lungs sound fine; he checked her eyes and her temperature and all is as it should be.

He wants her to go back in 6 weeks as he thinks it's weight related and even though she's already been cut back on her food and treats she needs to lost 2kg more to be an ideal weight.

If she hasn't lost any when we go back he's going to check her thyroid.

He said in her breed snoring us common and the panting isn't as worrying in a dog as it is in a cat.

Phew - This is good to hear - I bet you're relieved and glad you went now OP.

That's brilliant news! My Cavachon would pant really loudly sometimes always made me laugh as if I panted back at him he'd stop and stare at me. He was prone to being a bit chubby as well even though we would walk for miles together, I cut out thr treats and put him on Pooch and Mutt food and he lost the weight really easily.
