Our 15 year old dog has dementia, she spends most of the day sleeping, she gets very confused walking around aimlessly, looking at corners or blank walls, she gets very agitated with other dogs for these reasons, she will snap when we try to pick her up as she's unsure who we are at times, even when we do this with slow movements letting her sniff, know we're there. She also have very limited sight (walks into things, I'm sure she can see outlines) & is very limited of hearing or just totally lost all reasoning to respond to her name or anything other that extreme noises where she will look up. She cannot get on or off the bed/ sofa any more her chosen place to sleep although she has beds on the floor. Her nose works, she can smell food & eats. as she's not Is this life quality, it's so sad to see her like this, has anyone had similar experience & what did you do? Thanks for taking time to read 🐾

I'd PTS - and I think you know that's what you need to do, OP, or you wouldn't have asked. She sounds like she's suffering and unhappy and there truly are worse things for a dog than being PTS surrounded by her owners and people who love her.

I'm really sorry, it's never easy to say goodbye.

It’s time. The kindest nothing we can do for our loved pets is pts when the quality of life gets like this. I’m so sorry

Pts

She's only going to get worse. PTS sooner rather than later, don't let her suffer to protect your feelings.

My mum has dementia and there is no way I would let a dog suffer like that. But I think you are posting because you know but need people to tell you it's OK and you aren't a bad person.
It is ok and you aren't bad.

My dog had dementia, it was manageable and she had a quality of life for a time, and then she became physically ill and deteriorated quickly, I did initially try treatment but I stopped fairly soon, I should have had her PTS as soon as the physical symptoms started. The only normal thing my dog was doing was eating at that point. We shared a bag of crisps in the car waiting to go into the vets, but she didn't have any idea who I was and it was like feeding a scared stray as she took the food from me, not the happy, tail wagging little food beggar she used to be. It was that last instinct still active that hadn't yet been disrupted by the dementia.

I'm sorry OP, it's never a nice decision to make but dementia doesn't get better, the symptoms are manageable for a time but that's got to be balanced against quality of life and it sounds like your dog's quality of life has deteriorated a lot and will continue to do so, it's a kindness to end this, it will and does hurt to make the decision, of course it will, but it's the final good thing we're able to do for them in the interests of their welfare.

💔 Sorry to read your thread op, but at 15 she has had a good life, even though it is always going to be too short for you.

Thinking of you @OurBuild2023 come back if you need to talk about her, share memories etc, it's a hard thing to do, but the right decision x

itsnotmeitsu · 17/07/2024 14:40

@OurBuild2023 > You've probably helped a lot of people by posting this. A lot of what you describe applies to my 13 year-old greyhound, but some of the symptons could be put down to old-age rather than dementia. I don't think we're quite there yet, but I would rather go down the 'a bit soon' than regret that we left it late.
