Super Soft Absorbent washable puppy pee pad?!

MiddleagedBeachbum · 10/07/2024 17:57

Pic for puppy tax! 😍

We’re nearly there with house training, but would like her to be trained to go on a wee mat.

Currently using one of these:
2 Pcs Washable Pee Pads for... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CT3J2K21?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

But don’t buy one as they’re useless and don’t actually absorb any pee, it just puddles on the surface.

Puppy loves soft dog beds and blankets to pee on, so hoping I can find something absorbent, soft, padded, washable and small please!

Online you really can’t tell, despite googling, so hoping for recommendations. Thank you.

Why do you want to teach your pup to pee indoors? It’s generally best not to use these pads at all.

Thanks for the helpful comment!

Not that I need to explain myself, but I want to train her to as she’s so tiny and it’s 5 flights of steps between bedroom and garden. Plus very handy when travelling lots.
I’ve known other small dogs trained to only go on pee pads which she’s nearly there with.

Back to my actual question….

Tbh though it’s asking a lot to expect a puppy to learn that that bit of soft fabric is for toileting on, but that bit over there isn’t

if it’s a tiny breed and you want it to go indoors I’d go with some sort of litter tray set up

Abc1weabc1 · 10/07/2024 19:59

Better off with a litter tray type of set up than using pee pads which are very confusing as pp has pointed out.

nightmaries · 10/07/2024 20:07

5 flights of stairs between home and garden leads me to think you've got a puppy in a flat, and would like to train the puppy to pee indoors inside a flat?

Heavens.

KeenOtter · 10/07/2024 21:31

Its very common in Europe and the USA to toilet train animals to use an indoor wee area.

I would use a litter tray rather than cloth as it is easier for the puppy to learn the correct area to wee. If you use a litter tray and leave a bit of wee in the area the puppy will learn really quickly where to wee. You can use soil or grass in the litter box.

Thanks for the advice - yes I saw the idea when travelling with European people, who fly over Europe with their dogs and stay in hotels etc so have trained them to go on pee pads.

Just as an update - she is understanding pee pads = peeing.

Ita just the ones I’ve ordered don’t absorb the wee so it puddles on it meaning she walks in it unless I immediately dab with loo roll.

I know she likes soft bedding to wee on, but she’s already learnt not to and we have just one old soft dogs bed I’ve caught her using today, but otherwise she’s house trained and 95% of the time is outside except for first thing, last thing and middle of the night (only a few times).

Imagine a miniature dog in a flat!!!
scandalous!

No, I don’t live in a flat, simply a tall Victorian with steps down to the back garden and the beach on our doorstep.
Hope that’s helped calm your nerves 😬

The issue with a litter tray for me is they’re not easily transportable, I do like the idea of travel pee pads. Just ones that work!

@Wolfiefan I've heard this a lot but we used puppy pads initially and then he was fully toilet trained by 16 weeks.

Marblessolveeverything · 10/07/2024 22:21

I would be concerned about their aim and spillages.

The litter tray for the home and maybe disposable pads for our n about because I really don’t see anyone carrying around a wee sodden pad?

She’s teeney tiny, barely bigger than my hand so not too worried about spills!
Thanks for the advice though :)

@Beepbeepoutoftheway its true. If you train a pup to use pads you teach them peeing indoors is ok. Then you have to re train them to only go outdoors. No one wants a dog weeing in the house.

That’s just not true.

As I stated and others have, it’s very easy to train them to only pee on per pads or litter trays,

SOME dogs may not understand it, but it’s easily trainable.

She's so cute OP 😍

I have no idea how practical they are as I haven't personally used them but someone on Dragons Den a while ago had a product that was basically a litter tray but with live grass in it. They looked amazing and Stephen Bartlett invested in them

Marblessolveeverything · 10/07/2024 22:50

Maybe a bit left of field but would it be worth asking in living overseas?

I appreciate she is tiny but the smell won’t be. I have cats and the odd dog family visitor. We have an automated litter tray to reduce the smell but it can be a challenge to stay on top of it.

Wolfiefan · 10/07/2024 23:09

It is true. You’re still teaching them to pee inside. Most people want their dogs to pee outside. So don’t use pads. I wouldn’t want my dogs using my home as a toilet. Not even on a pad. It’s grim.

fieldsofbutterflies · 11/07/2024 06:56

Lots of narrow minded comments here from people who think there's only one way to "do" dog ownership.

It's actually very common for dogs to be trained to pee/poo in specific inside seas for all kinds of reasons - apartment buildings will even have purpose built doggy "toilet" areas in some places.

OP - instead of using pads why not invest in one of those indoor toilets with fake grass? They're fairly portable and easy to clean and you don't have to worry about spillages.

Thanks, good idea.
It won’t be for all pees, the majority she goes outside, mainly just first pee in the morning and late at night, plus regularly washed / changed.

You can buy bed pads that are meant for humans that you can wash. I think they’re called kylies.

fieldsofbutterflies · 11/07/2024 07:28

No problem!

I'm on a group on Facebook with lots of international dog owners and indoor grass toilets are surprisingly common and seem to work really well.

Much cheaper than pee pads too Grin

allaboardtheplaybus · 11/07/2024 07:58

Maybe a rubber backed bath mat? Or do the pee pads have to have some kind of special material to absorb smell?
