Fencing/dog containment ideas needed please!

My dog currently cannot go out at all without a lead. Even in the garden she needs to be on a lead as she has such a strong prey drive that she can get over our 6 foot fence!

I’m due to move to a new house with her, it has a large fenced off patio that I’d somehow like to make safe for her to be loose on. The kitchen has bifold doors which I’m keen to be able to use.

The current fence has waist high railings, I think she’d be over very easily.

My options as I see them are;

Have much higher railings fitted but it may look like a prison.

Keep the dog tethered somehow, if there’s a safe way to do that?

Invisible electric fence (not keen on this as I think it would make my dog more nervy).

What am I missing? How can I contain my dog?
Anything I haven’t thought of?

What about catio type fencing that's angled inward?

DogCanFly · 09/07/2024 11:15

I considered that, but I worry that a cat might get in but be unable to get out, and that would be awful for the cat!

I think you do just need a higher fence, I'm afraid. Those invisible electric fences are horrible and if your dog's prey drive is strong enough they don't work - a friend's dog was killed because she wanted to chase cars more than she minded the electric shock.

Catio fencing is designed to keep cats out as well as in, so this shouldn't be a problem.

What kind of dog?

In theory, things like fences with only vertical bars are harder to get over as they can’t be ‘climbed’. Good luck if it’s e.g.a Malinois though …

Not that I’d like them anyway, but electric fences usually don’t work with anything with strong prey drive - adrenaline will take them straight through it, but when not chasing the electric shock will prevent them coming back.

My friend has the electric fence thing that's just a wire dug in the grass around her property. It's very effective and dog just learns to stay within a certain area.

I’ve heard this about them.
My dog’s prey drive is insane under the right circumstances.

I’ll have a look at that then, this could be exactly what I need!

Vertical bars are certainly doable.
She’s a lurcher who identifies as a malinois so I’ll need to keep that in mind!

Perhaps a catio for the dog?

Essentially it's just a large kennel made from metal fencing including a roof, so fully enclosed.

Or can you put in a proper dog kennel with run? Probably cheaper actually than all new fencing.

Have a look at somewhere like Safe Cat uk who do customised catios when you have moved .
