Dog just swallowed a kebab stick

This morning I was getting something from the fridge and he jumped up and before I even realised had stolen the kebab out..swallowed the meat and stick whole.
He's gone straight to the vet and is having keyhole surgery to remove.
I'm at work as I figured better than sitting worrying at home.
I work alone so still plenty of worry time.
I'm so upset.
Surely he will be OK?it's a waiting game now to hear from the vet.
He's not yet 2.
A bouncy crazy very greedy cocker spaniel and my world.
I'm sure keyhole is pretty straightforward but I'm just concerned because it's a bloody sharp stick and what damage it could have caused.
Please can anyone reassure me?
All I can read online is about keyhole spays.

He'll be okay! He's young, robust and healthy. If they thought it was a serious issue they would have pre-warned you that they would not be doing it keyhole etc.

He'll be home by the end of the day, feeling sorry for himself, and desperate for more kebab (because he won't have learnt his lesson!). And you'll be there, patting his head and telling him you love him (whilst secretly thinking 'you little tosser').

It's easier said than done, but try not to worry. If you haven't heard from the vets in a couple of hours, give them a ring! Sometimes they don't ring straight away because other emergencies come in.

Thanks so much.
This is what I keep telling myself.
Kebabs are banned from our house now!

Oh what a daft beast. I'd like to say he's learned the hard way not to steal food but you know he won't have learned a thing! Sending you both good wishes op. I'd give it a reasonable time then call for an update. x

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 04/07/2024 09:42

And don't blame yourself!! I should have said that in my original post!

These things happen - I once had to get a vet to extract an entire rope toy from one of mine's throat - and we can't be 100% on it all the time. Honestly they really are worse than toddlers...

familyissues12345 · 04/07/2024 09:49

Dogs are flipping stupid at times, aren't they?!
I hope he's alright OP, like you I'd be beside myself if anything happened to my dog. She's a right pain in the arse at times, and we often "fall out" but she's also my best mate and the only thing in the house always happy to see me and give me a kiss Grin

Let us all know how he gets on!

Countrygirlxo · 04/07/2024 09:55

Before you even said cocker spaniel I just knew 😂 mine is EXACTLY the same. I'm sure she's also swallowed a kebab stick and my partner took her to the vet she was fine. Ive has to buy a dog proof bin, except she knew to press the button to open the lid so I've had to turn it round so she can't press it 😂 they're so bloody clever and so quick too!

It was only me in the kitchen, partner had gone to brush his teeth.
He is so cautious and always makes sure the sticks are in the bin and not left on the side etc..
So I do feel an element of I am to blame..but honestly the speed of him! Gone before I even got to him.
I've never had a cocker before bit I just love them.
He's full to bursting with personality.
I can't lose him this way.

Our vet removed a riding crop from a boxer a few years ago. In one piece!

spiderlight · 04/07/2024 15:43

Hopefully it's all done now and he's recovering and getting ready to come home.

Blooming cockers though - best breed in the world but they can't half get themselves into trouble! Ours has just cost us (well, our insurance) over six grand for a Christmas tree needle.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 04/07/2024 18:08

@ellebelli any news?

ellebelli · 04/07/2024 20:20

Hi.
Thanks to everyone who posted.
I've been in a constant state of worry.
The vets phoned at one, they managed to remove the skewer..in one piece.
It amazes me he managed to swallow it,it was at least 10cm.
We picked him up at 6 and he's currently resting on my lap.
He's very very drowsy and sad!
Over a thousand pounds but worth it to have him back and so far ok.
There is a risk of him developing peritonitis which is a worry(and my next thing to have anxiety over) but hopefully he will make a full recovery.
Thank you again 💓

Brilliant news! I must say he looks particularly sorry for himself…but glad he’s okay😊

He’s absolutely beautiful!

spiderlight · 04/07/2024 23:53

Glad that they managed to get it out. Hopefully he'll have a settled night and be less woeful in the morning.

OldSpeclkledHen · 05/07/2024 11:16

Oh blimey, hopefully wearing the cone of shame will teach him! (JOKE!)

Fingers X'd he continues to recover, what a cutie he looks too 🙂

Twoshoesnewshoes · 05/07/2024 11:19

That both terrified and reassured me!!

A friend's greedy lab swallowed a whole packet M&S chicken kebabs whole - think there were 6 in the pack. A very expensive visit to the veterinary hospital, but the dog was absolutely fine and lived to the ripe old age of 14.
