Wormer and Flea treatments

What treatment do you give your dogs?
I have a 19 week old puppy who is due to have something in the next couple of weeks.
The breeder used panacur for worms which I have tried and he had a really odd reaction to, so I'm reluctant to try again. He also had bravecto while still with his breeder, which I believe is prescription only. He hasn't seen a vet since I've had him as he was fully vaccinated, so I don't know how to get it.
TIA

Bravecto, Advocate and Frontal for my various dogs.

Your vet should sell you any of the above as long as they've seen you in the last year. Some will also write a prescription so you can (legally) buy them online at a much cheaper price

Simparica Trio monthly on prescription for fleas, ticks, and most worms including lungworm, plus shop bought Droncit for tapeworm.

If you know he tolerated the Bravecto, I would be inclined to continue with it. I understand they also do an annual injection which has recently been approved in UK.

You should still register with a vet and take puppy for a check. My dogs were all from a rescue, so had vet checks prior to adoption, but soon needed another check with my own vet for their prescription Simparica Trio.

Congratulations on new puppy! Any photo?

We signed up to the Healthy Pet Club via our vet, so everyone gets their yearly boosters, monthly flea and wormer and 6 monthly checkups included in the monthly price. Think the price for our dog is about £17pcm.

Eyesopenwideawake · 03/07/2024 15:22

Bravecto is very good - much prefer it to spot-ons.

WetBandits · 03/07/2024 15:22

Would absolutely recommend signing pup up with a vet for a puppy checkup so their first contact with the vet isn’t, god forbid, an accident or emergency in a scary, unfamiliar place with a stranger.

Our boy is a nervous Nelly so we take him to the surgery just to pop him on the scales occasionally and get a treat and a pat from the receptionist so he knows that sometimes you go to the vet for nice things, and scary things only happen some of the time.

I'm signed up with the care plan at our practice. Costs £19/month and as well as state of the art parasite treatment we get loads of other benefits. Lab is on Simparico Trio monthly, which does everything except tapeworm, and for that he has Droncit quarterly.

Nothing available over the counter deals with lungworm, btw.

Newpeep · 03/07/2024 16:43

Our vet gave us a combined worm and lungworm treatment as he said puppies quite commonly pick it up through eating slugs and snails.

fellflatonmeface · 03/07/2024 18:57

Bravecto and Milbemax
(both from vet)

We use Billy No Mates for fleas and ticks. Works very well for my two. A pinch a day on their food.

KeenOtter · 03/07/2024 19:48

Wormcount and treat only when dogs have worms. Only needed to do so 2 in 20 odd years.

Groom daily to remove ticks if they attach.

LilyJessie · 03/07/2024 19:53

Prinovox for us!

That's not true - Panacur covers lungworm and is available from Amazon.

Thank you all for your replies 😊
I'm considering getting a health plan from the vet I'll be using.
Does anyone recommend these?

Personally I think they're a waste of money. Just one example below. I've bolded the only thing you might actually needed...

https://www.vets4pets.com/pet-health-plans/complete-care-junior/puppies/

  1. Initial vaccinations - puppy should have had first round and second round is cheap (you said yours has had these already. So this isn't a saving)
  2. Boost vaccination (you'd need this)
  3. Vet proscribed protection. One you have visited a vet they will write you a prescription (for free) and you can buy the medication at 1/3 of the price online.
  4. Two further consultations. What for? I've never needed this and most people don't. An a consultation is like £40 anyway, so not that expensive.
  5. Three nurse consultations and a nail clip...great. You can do that at home. Not a saving.
  6. Micorpchipping. This isn't a saving. Your dog should come microchipped
  7. Basic urine screening. Not needed. No one I know does them
  8. Tailored support throughout your puppy's first year, direct to your inbox. I call this spam.
  9. Access to the Complete Care 24/7 Vet Careline. Most insurers offer this anyway - Sainsburys does.
  10. We'll send you handy reminders when your puppy's annual vaccinations are due and when to administer their treatments. More spam.

'Extra benefits'

  1. £20 off neutering - LOL. You shouldn't neuter any dog before a year anyway. And £20?! Off £300!? Ha!
  2. £40 off dental scale and polish. You can brush your dogs teeth and save money.
  3. Annual general health & wellness blood screen for just £45. Con.
  4. 4 weeks free pet insurance (if requested). Pointless. You already have insurance.

As you can see...most of their 'offers' are just gimmicks that you don't need. Over £200 a year...to save maybe £60?

FWIW my local vets (not the one my partner works at as I don't take my dogs to his practice) offer similar. It's a total con IMO.

Not any more has to have been specifically discussed and prescribed as of September last year.
