brachycephalic dogs

A few days ago I saw an English bulldog, eyes were bulging, tongue hanging out and just walking it was loudly straining for every breath. This wasn't an old dog either. It could barely walk, let alone run. It was so deformed with short legs and squat shoulders, meaning it's front paws were turned in facing each other. It was really suffering and just looked miserable. Poor thing shocked me, and I felt terrible for it, why do people buy or breed them? It's just suffering all the time. Braycephalic dogs need to be banned, stop breeding them, stop buying them, crufts stop showcasing deformed and suffering animals, we need better and healthier breed standards. It's awful 😞 it's so unnecessary and cruel.

I always find that people who buy these breeds proclaim to be animal lovers.

No, you really aren’t. You can’t love animals and buy breeds that suffer.

I would say with my dog's breed (Border terrier) that bybs and 'pet' breeders are ruining them.

When we were looking the only people health testing or giving any attention to matching dogs for temperament and health were the KC breeders. OK they are a fairly hardy breed but SLEM, plus neurological issues, knee issues, gut issues and skin issues are creeping in and in increasing numbers. The healthiest I know are from the KC lines (and the prominent ones too).

I get asked a lot how much she cost and crikey why did I pay that much? (2k) Because we wanted to stack the odds in our favour of a healthy and happy dog and encourage those breeding practices and the only way to do that was go KC reg.

I agree in some cases the KC are ruining the breeds but not in all.

I didn’t realise borders were still going for 2k!? I know many went to that much during Covid. Not at all saying they are not worth that but didn’t realise they go that high.

Myborder fully health tested for what is recommended etc was £850 in 2019. His breeder was a ‘show’ breeder but his line is all mixed between the more show borders and the more working ones, if that makes sense.

I’ve seen some shocking borders though, some breeders (who seem to be popular) are not a breeder I would ever touch, but people seem to be fawning all over them. Not saying the breeder I got mine from was perfect but I was/am very happy 😂

and on the topic of cost, who pays 10k for an English bulldog! Do they go frequently for that kind of money :O

therss someone local to me who has a business that does artificial insemination for dogs that can’t conceive naturally. And on businesses Facebook page she advertises dogs for stud and bitches who are ‘available’ and very few have any health tests (or at least it’s not in the advert or anything) vast majority are really not suitable to be bred from or of a standard where someone would actually want to breed from them. It’s honestly ridiculous. And I use business as it’s actually a business, not just some woman doing it on the side.

It's heartbreaking. We see a bulldog like that in one of our local parks, heaving himself along trying to kee up with his owner, and you can hear him coming miles off just from his breathing. It makes me so angry that someone, somewhere, has profited from his suffering.

I have 2 French bulldogs. Bought them from a breeder who shows successfully all over Europe . Each cost many thousands . They have a fantastic life , run play etc without any problems . The only thing is I'm very aware of heat , so hot days they stay in the shade with their paddling pool but then lots of dogs don't like heat .

I've also had 2 British bulldogs . I only have bullbreeds but they are all well bred and I have seen some shockers but not mine .

The state of some of these dogs, the breeders should be prosecuted. They are born to suffer. People buy these deformed dogs and then complain about vets bills.
I really wish the UK would follow Norway and the Netherlands and completely ban brachys.

Pre covid they were £1-1.5k for a health tested line bred pup. During covid they went up a bit but then that was all health tested or KC reg or not. I’ve just had a quick look on the KC website and they are sitting around £1.5 - 2k again. I’ve never seen a KC health reg pup for less than £1k and know quite a few people who bought them. It may be area dependent of course. They’re still cheaper than a poodle cross in my area 😉

Mine has Ch dad and a working mum but from the show lines. She’s erm, sparky 🤣 But as a trainer it’s what I (thought I) wanted 🤣

Oh wow. I’d never seen any well bred pups for more than £1.2k in 2019. Must just be areas looked at (I was looking at Scotland and Lincolnshire 😂)
