Tell me about these guys, especially Dachshunds, I know they come in different sizes and coats, do the breed variants have different personality traits too?
Looking for a family dog but would mainly be for DD age 7 who is very gentle and animal mad.

I have a King Charles cavalier spaniel, turning 3 soon, she is a delight and really lovely family dog, she is just as happy to snuggle on the sofa or go for a run around the woods.

Mine came from a breeder who only bred King Charles cavalier, and from both parents who are health tested.

Honestly they make such lovely family dogs, the breed is known for some health issues some best advice would be is to ensure both parents are health tested.

Lots of dog breeds have health issue's get a the dog breed you love.

middleagedandinarage · 26/06/2024 20:57

*@WhoppingBigBackside really because I know very little about these breeds and haven't ever met them in real life.
This thread has definitely put my off a dachshund. I do still love ckc and feel personality wise they would fit in really well in our family but the health issues are a huge concern.

*@JemOfAWoman that's very interesting, I don't know anything about Bedlington terriers, will research this breed. I do like whippets though

We have a terrier cross who is a great little dog, loves playing, easy to train, extremely loyal.

With terriers you tend to get big dog personality in a small package.

WhoppingBigBackside · 26/06/2024 21:13

@middleagedandinarage , no harm in doing a bit of research.
I'd advise against a 'rescue' dog, but if you found a dog being rehomed for a genuine reason, from someone you can trust that would be an excellent option.

I'm a bit wary of the 'lockdown puppy' - the cute puppy bought on a whim and discarded once the cute puppy phase had passed and the lack of training evident. These are usually breeds bought for their looks and originally bought from 'greeders'.

A miniature poodle would be an option. I'd not disregard a JRT. I've never known one that wasn't a delight, and I've known a few. Staffies are lovely but bigger.
I'm also a fan of the heinz 57 dogs but only if they are a mix of breeds not prone to health issues.

BodyKeepingScore · 26/06/2024 21:19

@Life2Short4Nonsense many of these are desperately unsuitable for a family pet

whyhavetheygotsomany · 26/06/2024 21:30

Why don't you rescue. You can go on the waiting list for a young dog that needs a home. Don't encourage breeding

Cyberpixie · 26/06/2024 21:39

Corgi?

WhoppingBigBackside · 26/06/2024 21:44

@whyhavetheygotsomany , because they could end up with an untrained youngish dogs bought by someone who discarded the puppy once the novelty had worn off.

Daffyyellow · 26/06/2024 21:47

Family experience
3 dachshunds, all minis, first smooth, second and third wire haired, the third had back issues but the first 2 were huge characters and brilliant dogs.
many, many Cavaliers. You need to go to a reputable breeder with dogs who have been health tested. Fabulous family dogs, 1 currently snoozing on my lap, another across my shoulders (yes, in a heatwave!) and a third snoring on the other sofa. So affectionate, great with children if properly introduced and trained (dogs and kids). Will sleep all day or trot out with you for hours. Do need a regular brush. Couldn’t be without a Cav or 2 in my life!
The only cairn we had was vicious.

Even more reason to rescue then ! A dog has a bad start and can make a wonderful pet given the chance to be. Shame you can see this.

WhoppingBigBackside · 26/06/2024 21:54

@whyhavetheygotsomany , OP is not an experienced dog owner and an untrained, unsocialised, dog possibly with a high risk of health issues is not going to be a suitable family pet for them.

Rescue centres are quite fussy who they will let adopt a pet.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/06/2024 22:04

I'd recommend a Chihuahua. They are so loving and low maintenance ime.Toilet training is a must though especially with males.
I'm on my second as she's the most pure soul.I adore her.

Life2Short4Nonsense · 26/06/2024 22:07

Many have pointed out that my suggestion upthread are not suitable for the OP's situation and likely not for many other people's situations as well. I have asked Mumsnet to remove my post, as I can't edit it.

Meadowtrees · 26/06/2024 22:17

I have known quite a few borders who while amazing with humans were very aggressive to other dogs. Ours ended up having to be muzzled as he’d go beserk just on seeing a dog on or off the lead. Went for a massive Alsatian once. I would never, ever get one again!!

We have indeed absolutely ruined the breed - which is such a shame because (as you say) their temperaments are pretty much what every family is looking for these days. Damn every breeder involved in taking that breed to such a state.

tabulahrasa · 27/06/2024 08:52

pinkorchid1 · 26/06/2024 15:15

Every dachshund I've met has been really really yappy. I think they are very difficult to train too.
Have you thought about a Staffordshire bull terrier? Admittedly I've not owned one but they are notoriously amazing with children and are great family dogs. A true staffie is also pretty small. I think the biggest potential issue is they can be difficult with other dogs if not well socialised as a puppy.

Staffy was going to be my suggestion as well - well bred ones aren’t what people think they are, they’re quite dinky little dogs. Playful, trainable, affectionate, they’re really nice little dogs.

YourWinter · 27/06/2024 09:05

Don’t think in terms of a dog being your 7 year old’s pet. You will be exercising and training, cleaning up its mess and paying to replace the stuff it destroys, you will be flea-combing it and paying for someone to look after it when you go away, you will be paying for its food and its beds and the vet bills.

Don't consider a dachshund, extreme shapes are inherently prone to problems, and no first time dog owner should consider any spaniel. How much do you want to spend on coat care? You may be happy to make time every day to comb it but if you get something that needs clipping, stripping or professional grooming every few weeks it really adds up.

JRTs have a rep for dog aggression, but I've never had an issue with one out walking (possibly because the owner of the local dickhead JRT keeps him under control). Border terriers OTOH...

There's one who gets walked on an extending lead on the local playing fields who is a little shit. He'll approach another dog with no strong signs of aggression, and then as the friendly exchange of sniffs begins, he'll just launch. He's not the first I've encountered who's a bugger round other dogs, either.

The temperamentally sound ones are delightful, cute and responsive and social. The dog aggressive ones are... Yeah, wouldn't want to own one like that.

Fontainebleau007 · 27/06/2024 09:19

I'm also going to be one of the people that say apply to your local rescue, see if they can put you on a waiting list for any particular young dogs/puppies that come in if that's what you're looking for. I worked at a cat rescue and that's what we did.

OrlandointheWilderness · 27/06/2024 09:19

TBH I'd say go with a nice mid sized mongrel! It doesn't need to be a pure bred, surely? Loads of lovely types out there. Some terrier x dogs are fab.

I've got a lab and a sprocker spaniel. Both are working dogs. In the past we've had springers and cockers. All spans have an off switch, some need to be taught to settle more than others but they are calm when properly stimulated and given enough brain work. My sprocker is fab - a lovely mix. Keen to please, but more independent thinking than the springers which is why I like working him - he thinks for himself a little more. Plus he is beautiful!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/06/2024 09:26

Soulmole 😍

** I love terriers so much.

Op I've yet to meet a bichon frise that's not a sweetheart, if I ever get a second dog I'd consider a bichon.

I have only really asked about these because I know nothing about them (clearly 🙈) and haven't met either in real life.
Live rural so looking for something that's happy to go for a decent walk but also happy to snuggle on the sofa. Small/medium size, have always have larger breeds but DD wants a small dog

Staffordshire bull terrier ticks your boxes. The pure bred ones are a small to medium dog.
