Had to put dog to sleep today

I am absolutely gutted. He was a 15 year old rescue. Being 15 you would think I would be more prepared mentally for this eventuality, but I am just not. I miss him terribly.

I am so sorry. It's horribly painful I know, and there's nothing anyone can say or do that can make it easier to bear. Just know that you took him in, loved him and made his life a joy to him for years. No dog could ask for more. And then you gave him the huge gift of a loving end to his happy life. You've been so kind. Be gentle with yourself.

Captainladder · 25/06/2024 17:39

I'm so sorry for your loss. I think there is a difference between logically knowing of the eventuality and the emotional realisation. They just steal part of our hearts, and we are better for it - and it hurts. Hugs.

CockerMum · 25/06/2024 17:40

I’m so sorry, nothing can prepare you. Sending lots of love. What was his name?

fieldsofbutterflies · 25/06/2024 17:40

I'm sorry, it's awful. Was in the same position a few weeks ago. Look after yourself.

TheShellBeach · 25/06/2024 17:47

I'm so sorry to hear this. It's always tragic when a companion animal dies.

I'm so sorry. It really is soooo horrendously painful when they have to go. They are family members after all.

I clearly remember back in November 2019 when I had to have my own 15 year old labrador put to sleep. It was awful. I cried regularly for weeks and the house felt very empty.

If I am honest, I'd known we were on borrowed time for a good couple of years at least, and whilst I was grateful for that time, nothing can ever make it any easier.

You've made the kindest decision possible at the right time, but it is very hard.

Beautifulbythebay · 25/06/2024 17:56

Sorry for your loss op.. Are you ready to show us your gorgeous ddog?

Spencer0220 · 25/06/2024 17:58

So sorry for your loss. It's the hardest, but kindest, thing you could have done.

TheShellBeach · 25/06/2024 18:38

What was your boy's name, OP?

Seaside1234 · 25/06/2024 18:43

I'm so sorry. We know this is coming for our elderly spaniel, but it doesn't make it any easier. I bet he had a marvellous life with you. Huge virtual hugs to you and everyone who loved him xx

His name was Trooper. We loved him so much. I can't seem to pull myself together. Thank you to all for the replies.

It’s utterly devastating, it’s just over a year since I lost my beautiful girl, my little angel and I miss and ache for her every single day. So sorry for your loss OP, we understand here, slowly in time the pain will lessen but the love always remains, they are gone but still remain part of our lives.

muddyford · 26/06/2024 06:37

Having had two very old dogs PTS over the years you think, as they get older, that they are immortal.

cantstandtheplace · 26/06/2024 06:57

Sending hugs OP.
We had our very elderly rescue PTS a few days ago so it's still raw. It was no easier than with younger dogs we've had over the years, just different. They are part of the family and his passing seems like the end of an era. Be kind to yourself. It will get easier.

Springwatch123 · 26/06/2024 07:06

Sorry to hear. Sending hugs to you.

spiderlight · 26/06/2024 13:43

So very sorry. It's just utterly blooming awful, isn't it?

Yup. In my head I really think our elderly dog is never going to die.

Darling Trooper.

Honestly OP I totally feel for you. The paîn is awful. I found the Blue Cross Pet Bereavement Helpline extremely kind when my darling girl died. Just wasn't coping, but the responders totally, totally got it, and whatever training they have had it is brilliant.

I would whisper in her ear that she would be the longest lived dog ever. She made it to 18 so I was very lucky

So sorry for your loss, it's the day I absolutely dread with my two girls. Rescue dogs are amazing aren't they, although it's hard now please don't leave that gap in your lives for too long, share your wonderful love with another dog soon if you can ♥️

MartyFunkhouser · 30/06/2024 19:37

It’s the worst thing. Unrelentingly sad. But what a good age.

We lost our beloved dog late last year. I took huge comfort from the fact he had a beautiful life and knew nothing but joy and love. But my husband and I cried for a solid week.

We have a new puppy now and it has helped enormously.

Buildingthefuture · 30/06/2024 19:39

It’s beyond awful. I’ve done it so many times and it NEVER gets any easier. I still cry about the first dog I lost, almost 20 years ago! But, in time, you will focus more on the lovely, happy times you had with Trooper. You will smile through your tears and feel lucky that you had him. And, in time, you might feel ready to go again….to open your heart and home to another needy soul…..
I’ve got to be honest, my others are the only thing that keep me going in the aftermath of loosing one. I know some people say they would never have another, but all mine have been rescue, with a shit start in life. Every single one of them would absolutely want me to give their spot to another needy doggo, so that’s what I do……and it helps xxxx
