Hypothyroidism

My dog is being tested for hypothyroidism. She doesn't have any symptoms other than some fur loss patches.
Does anyone know how much thyroid medication might cost? I know is she has it, she will need them for the rest of her life, and I am bracing myself for the cost!

Sorry, I don’t know much. Only ever had one with it & she didn’t need treatment. However I do have it myself & have been on Thyroxine for decades. The human version is really cheap so don’t see why the drug itself should be expensive. Now vet fees for it are I expect a whole other ball game. So should she need it I definitely recommend buying a six month prescription from the vet, usually @£20, & buy from oneofthe brilliantly reliable online vet pharmacies, which is what I’ve done many, many times.

About £25 per month and then a yearly blood test at around £200-300.

You may be able to pay for the prescription from your vet and get the meds online - in which case they'll be a bit cheaper.

Or you can join the pet health club and get 20% discount and all your vaccines and flea/worm treatment included. Which may also help control total costs.

Sorry, forgot to add they are tiny, tasteless, cheap tablets that can make the world of difference. Of all the chronic illnesses to face - this is one of the easiest and cheapest to manage Smile

Thank you both for your replies and reassurance. I also have hypothyroidism, so I feel a connection with her!
