Advice needed: dog rash

user1489844432 · 12/06/2024 20:48

I am unable to get appt with vets until next week so I am reaching out to see if anyone here could advice on what may be causing this rash and what I could do to help. It seems to be self inflicted as my dog constantly scratches and lickes the area. I also seen the dog bum scooting few times. My dog is cross between poodle and terrier. Regular flea and worming treatment, no recent changes in the diet and taken for walks to regular places.

Washing powder allergy? Carpet freshener allergy? Some sort of food allergy? Been lying outside in the grass? Many years ago ddog was allergic to grass seed. Poor ddog permanently smelled of Germolene!!
Our husky had hot spots last year. Make a jug of green tea. Leave to cool and dab on the area. Absolutely worked and very safe.

Floralnomad · 12/06/2024 20:55

I would say that warrants an emergency appt it looks really sore and the dog licking / scratching is only going to make it worse soon the interim I’d be putting a buster collar or suit on .

Meadowflower2023 · 12/06/2024 20:58

Agree with PP that dog needs a vet appointment asap. It looks like it should have seen a vet way before now. Poor thing, please try to get in sooner.

TurtleTackle · 12/06/2024 21:06

I don't think it matters if it's self inflicted or not, it looks red and angry and also very very uncomfortable.
Urgent vet appointment needed.
How long has this been going on?

Autumn1990 · 12/06/2024 21:07

I’m not usually one to rush to the vet but that needs looking at tomorrow.
has the dog been near any vegetation or chemical that could have caused it? We once had a cat sprayed with weed killer that had a nasty rash. Cat was fine and lived a long life.

Oh that does look sore! Try and get him seen urgently. Put a cone collar on if you have one to,prevent the licking and biting. My vet recommends Sudocrem to help heal injuries but not sure you should apply,y to such an extensive area.

babyproblems · 12/06/2024 21:54

Agree vets asap.
i suspect an allergy. Washing powder? Cleaning products? Even flea treatment allergy. Or a flea allergy and the treatments aren’t working.
Get to vets asap! I would give an oatmeal bath tonight to try and help ease itching or discomfort and clean bedding.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 12/06/2024 21:57

That needs an emergency vet it looks raw enough to be a proper infection risk

ACynicalDad · 12/06/2024 22:10

Do you have the option of online vets with your pet insurance? We do but it's easy to forget! If you do you may get an appointment tonight and that may help you get an emergency appointment in the morning.

thedendrochronologist · 12/06/2024 22:17

I'm the least inclined to go to a vet but that is huge!

The area is so vast you can't treat a home .

You could try a piriton in case it's allergy (over the counter one - not from the shelf) and calpol for pain relief. But you have to google the instruction and dosage.

Bathe with salt water and get an antiseptic spray? Usually the first advice for small areas?

When did it start?

I'm not in any way medically trained.

thedendrochronologist · 12/06/2024 22:18

Get an inflatable buster collar rather than a cone or put some shorts on the dog. Agree clean towel on bed to cut down infection risk

user1489844432 · 12/06/2024 23:05

Thanks a lot for all your feedback. This started yesterday and perhaps I have underestimated it as the dog doesn't show any signs of pain, plays as usual etc and doesn't seem to be bothered even when I touch the area but I will ask for emergency appt tomorrow. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Don’t give liquid paracetamol/calpol The paracetamol is fine for dogs but some of the sweetners are poisonous.

Fuckitsstillraining · 13/06/2024 00:07

Vet asap. My dog developed allergies when he got on in years, evert year around May he starts scratching, earlier if its warm and continues until October, we tried so many different medications but realised the only thing that works is a low dose of steroids, we keep the dose as low as possible and for the shortest time possible. Never did discover exactly what revision reacting to but suspect pollen, this year he's not been as bad but we've had rotten weather so far.

iloveeverykindofcat · 13/06/2024 05:44

This all happened overnight?! Yeah he needs an emergency appointment, he's reacting badly to something.

Floralnomad · 15/06/2024 18:01

Did you manage to get your dog to the vet @user1489844432 ?

lovemycbf · 15/06/2024 18:08

My old girl weighed 7kg and under the vets advice she had two piriton a day every day as she was allergic to life! I also used hibi scrub to sooth and clean and always washed her down after a walk as pollen sticks
Chicken and rice are big allergens too so maybe try an elimination diet one thing removed at a time ,mine couldn't have kibble either
But poor doggie needs a vet asap

user1489844432 · 06/07/2024 18:55

Late update but yes I got the vet appt. The dog got apoquel and all was OK since then. I was also told that in the future I could give one tablet of piriton a day if needed.

Good news, OP. One of our dogs had Piriton for years, it is v effective.
