I've advertised my two dogs but now I'm getting messages I'm feeling a bit nervous. Does anyone here borrow their dog out? Is it safe?

A long time ago I had a paid subscription as a potential 'walker'. I wanted a dog but didn't have the lifestyle to look after one full time because I was working.

I found it absolutely useless because I wanted to 'borrow' a dog when I had time - in the evenings or at the weekends but most owners wanted to spend that time with their dog and were looking for free 'doggy day care' all day or to leave the dog full time with the borrower for a holiday - but if I could have had a dog full time, I'd have had my own!

I met a couple of owners and dogs but never got involved in a regular set up as neither of them suited me. The one owner was an arse and the other dog wasn't my cup of tea. I am a careful and responsible purpose who just really wanted a dog and thought this might be a fun way to 'make friends' with a dog I could walk regularly.

When you say 'is it safe' I assume you mean are people going to steal your dog?

Like I said I was on it and perfectly normal non-stealer of dogs - but gave up as found it useless. I expect it's like internet dating and you need to use some common sense - speak first, meet the person with your dog, find out about them, verify their identity, maybe look for people with paid subscriptions - at least you know they've provided a credit card to do that.

But if your dog is a pedigree expensive Best of Breed type with chunky value on the open market, then you'd probably be better off paying a professional walking service.

*careful and responsible person (damn autocorrect) but not careful enough to spot a typo apparently!

I borrowed for a while, as cover for an unwell owner. Unfortunately she died and the dog was rehomed.

Like pp, I never found another suitable match as owners mostly seemed to want to use it and free doggy day care. Either that or they didn't respond to messages

I’ve got a borrowed dog asleep on my legs right now. We borrow him every other weekend for half a day or so 😍

I wouldn't. My dogs are worth more to me than fobbing them off on some random I don't know.

These people could literally be anyone. Best case scenario your dog is fine. Worst case you never see your dog again and it's used in those awful underground dog fights and dies a horrible, painful, death.

And, even if they are 'fine' what happens if they're taking your dog(s) for walks and your dog(s) is attacked? Or if it spooks and runs away? Or if it's injured?

I used to be a Borrower, we looked after a couple of dogs from time to time and took really good care of them.
However, there are some piss takers on there who wanted loads of free dog sitting at short notice and a lot of people who really shouldn't have been dog owners at all.
We stopped when we got DDog

I was on there for a while as DSs all left home & left their dog with me. I work, including some sleep ins, so I mainly wanted company for him. He was elderly and couldn't walk far. Everyone who contacted me through Borrow My Doggy wanted to walk him for miles as an incentive for them to exercise, so it didn't really work for me. Fortunately a friend who lives nearby helped out until DDog died.

I know I'm hugely biased as I'm a professional walker myself, but the whole thing just makes me feel really uneasy.

While I'm sure the vast, vast majority of borrowers are lovely, genuine people - there is just no way I could leave my dog with any of them, lol. I'd be way too paranoid and worried about the "what ifs".

Dog "borrowing" is lovely when it goes right, but would you trust them to know what to do if, heaven forbid, it went wrong? Would you trust them to do the right thing if your dog got injured or sick, or heaven forbid, escaped? Would they be guaranteed to keep your dog on a lead or away from livestock etc?
