Increased animal welfare laws

Steve Reed (Shadow Environment Minister / Labour) tweeted earlier today:

"Labour will introduce the biggest boost in animal welfare in a generation.

Labour will:

• Phase out the use of dogs, minipigs and rabbits in product testings
• End trail hunting that allows for the illegal hunting of foxes, deer, and hares to continue
• Ban the import of body parts from slaughtered endangered animals
• End the illegal smuggling of dogs, puppies and kittens
• End illegal puppy farming by criminal gangs who profit from animal cruelty
• Ban the sale of animals with cropped ears
• Ban the importation of dogs and cats with fashion-based mutilations
• Ban the use of snare traps
• Ban the importation of heavily pregnant cats and dogs"

Nothing on some of those points on HOW they will do that - apparently plan to come within first year of government - but I am cheered to see some of these points on a political agenda and I missed it in the press on Friday.

I really hope they can manage even half of all this. (Ideally all of it)

If I believed anything these twats said, I would feel encouraged about this too. But I don’t - this is more marketing/spin/rhetoric..

Politics aside, I think these are good aims for any government to have.

Personally, I think we also need to consider something akin to 'torture breeding' laws as well, As they do in the Netherlands.

Hopefully they will also look into the horrific cruelty that goes on in the meat and dairy industries and our slaughter houses.

Yes - that would be good too!

Most points are already illegal... so for me they will have to demonstrate how they stop the criminals in the first place and how to get rid of the loopholes.

He will get my vote if there's any progress on these aims
