We've made the right choice, haven't we?

Went to a greyhound rescue centre.

We looked at 2 dogs. Didn't opt to see anymore because it was hard enough choosing from the 2!

Dog 1

  1. A girl
  1. Incredibly placid. Almost too placid! She didn't bat an eyelid at a single thing on our walk
  1. Beautiful to walk on lead. Just amazing. I've never walked a dog so considerate and graceful
  1. Much smaller than Dog 2
  1. She had been there just 3 days before we came to see her
  1. I wanted a girl! I did go with an open mind, but I knew I was looking for a girl

Dog 2

  1. Incredibly happy to meet us. Genuinely seemed very intrigued to see us, but nothing crazy! Just a mellow, happy soul
  1. Been there months and months :( his sister was rehomed a long while ago but nobody wanted him yet
  1. He sought my DC out. If DC stopped walking or get upset at something strange on the walk, he stopped, quizzed the situation and gently put his head under DC's arm. And they both walked on, calmly and beautifully Flowers
  1. Again, like Dog 1, walked beautifully on lead. His ears pricked up a few times passing by, but he had 0 interest in the yappy dog going by, and just looked a little curious then looked away at a bird
  1. I felt he wanted to be with us. I just felt that he was interested in DS and would have a bit more interest in his antics. Dog 1 was faultless but she didn't react to DS at all
  1. The greyhound 'lean'. When we took him back, he leaned against me when I sat down. It was like I was his owner for years

Both dogs were the same age.

We've made the right choice, haven't we? I feel guilty as Dog 1 was beautiful and doesn't deserve to be in a kennel. But my gut instinct just told me 'this is your dog' within a minute of meeting Dog 2

Not sure why I'm posting but she wanted to get my thoughts on paper! Dog 2 arrives on Monday with his paperwork

Can you see how you get on with No 2 and ring the rescue on the off chance No1 is still there further down the line? Im very jealous but no chane living in a flat my cat girls would be distraught.

Ylvamoon · 09/06/2024 09:13

Aww, he's been waiting for you all this time.

JadedSoJaded · 09/06/2024 09:23

He chose you and what a privilege to be on the receiving end of ‘the lean’. I hope he & your son build a fantastic bond.
I’m sure Dog 1 will be rehomed quickly. As an experienced greyhound owner, it is not uncommon for them to be a little shut down in the early days after retiring from racing. Only one of mine was fairly animated at first meeting, but she’d been in a foster home with other hounds for a while. The others soon allowed their personalities to show, once settled in & they realised their quirks were welcome. All have been only dogs. None barked. Except in their sleep. Enjoy your pointy friend.

Stop! I was thinking this at first

Do it do it do it 👏👏👏👏

HappiestSleeping · 09/06/2024 09:32

Another vote for having both.

maw1681 · 09/06/2024 10:00

Yeah I would have gone for dog 2 definitely!

I know someone who got a rescue greyhound and while it was very well behaved it literally did nothing all day but sleep and go for one walk where it had a long run then wanted to go home. My friend felt like they never really bonded even though there were no problems as such. The dog just didn't have much of a personality, sounds like dog 1 could have been like this

Getupat8amnow · 09/06/2024 10:02

In the 90s my mum and I went to a rescue centre to pick a dog to join our family. We wanted a small, young female dog but feel instantly in love at first sight with an enormous nine year old male Labrador. We took him home and loved him unconditionally for the three years he had once we got him. It was meant to be and though we only had him three years they were wonderful years.

lavafield · 09/06/2024 10:06

Definitely the right choice! You would feel regret if you hadn't picked your doggy no 2 as he was clearly "the one" for you. Doggy no 1 will surely be rehomed in no time if she is so lovely and easy. Enjoy your new family member!!

MissMelanieH · 09/06/2024 10:09

Rescuing a greyhound can never be the wrong choice in my book!!

I'd have wanted the one who's been there for months too and it sounds like you clicked so decision made yes I would like to see a photo too!!

If dog 1 was so placid and quiet she might actually be better suited to a quiet, sleepy home so that's something else to consider

OperationPushkin · 09/06/2024 10:50

I think you've made the right choice. Or rather, Dog 2 chose you. I've always thought that our dogs chose us. I still occasionally ponder about the dogs we might have had instead, but in each case it has felt as though the one we have was the one we were meant to have.

I'm sure that Dog 1 will be snapped up quickly. If you decide against taking her as well. . .

Floralnomad · 09/06/2024 12:00

Greyhounds do fold up quite well so you likely could fit 2 into quite a small area . 2 would be nice company for each other .

ScattyHattie · 09/06/2024 14:42

I'd have gone with dog 2 given seems to have the right character for your family

No need to feel guilty for dog 1 she'll likely be snapped up and the females tend to be more popular, partly as they're sometimes smaller and people can have negative views on males as PP, though I've found very little difference between them. If from racing they'll have grown up in kennels so they are likely to feel more at home with that routine than most pet dogs.

annag22 · 09/06/2024 14:45

Don't worry about him being a boy. I have a male whippet - he is very gentle and loving. In general, male whippets are calmer and more affectionate than females, some of whom who can be quite dominant. Is it the same for greyhounds?

TurtleTackle · 09/06/2024 15:17

Ahhh,
I definitely think you made the right decision.
He chose you! When I went for my boy - I had the pick of 2 brothers ( he was described the most calmer of the 2 - I dread to think what his brother was like 😂) I just looked at him and I thought yes - this is the one!!
He is 1 in a couple of days and he's is the most affectionate little boy - crazy and annoying yes has many many moments where he has me ripping my hair out but I can see the incredible dog he is going to be.
When you know you just know
Anyway life is too short get dog 1 too! If not I'll have her 😏

helpontheheys · 09/06/2024 16:45

Thank you. If anyone is interested, the Kennels are on the Herts/Essex borders but rehome further afar

The best matches are when the dog chooses the owner!

helpontheheys · 10/06/2024 12:18

Hi again,

Everyone meet Frankie Star

He came in, has done two wees outside. And has even eaten a meal already!

He is super friendly and already seems at home after just 30 mins of pacing at the start

We've made the right choice, haven't we?
OP posts:
Springwatch123 · 10/06/2024 12:25

He’s lovely and looks settled already.

Unluckycat1 · 10/06/2024 13:12

Aww, you made the right choice for sure! You do tend to see male greyhounds lingering in rescue. I think they can be quite big which is off-putting, or at least makes the females more appealing.

I had bitch bias when I picked my pup. My local rescue had a litter and I didn't consider any boys, and my girl is pretty aloof and not that cuddly, which seems to be broadly more of a bitch than dog thing (obviously with many exceptions). I think my children might have preferred a dog, but we all love her despite her regal temperament 😅

Congratulations on your boy ❤

helpontheheys · 10/06/2024 13:18

Thank you

He's come in, had 2! Wees outside. Eaten well. And is now having a snooze 😴

We are going for a little walk soon. I was warned he would be pacing for ages but that just hasn't happened

He's also been gently playing with a few toys

Taken to his new bed like a charm too

I didn't know this but I don't think the breed barks very much in general. The owner of the branch was telling me they're not very barky as a whole

Hahahaha.
Our greyhound barked way more than our Labradors ever did 😁. It was a demand bark. Woof woof woof - walk me NOW! Woof woof woof - feed me NOW! Woof woof woof - adore me NOW! You get the picture. She barked, we jumped, the diva ruled the house. They’re such adorable dogs. I wonder if he was there longer as he’s a black dog - the fancy colours tend to go first, a lot of black greyhounds have been at our local rescue way longer than the , say, brindle dogs. I love that he’s adopted the pointy nose pose of hang off edge of bed, nose touching ground - it’s how they contact the Mothership. Beware the greyhound death scream though, he’s laid back now but something will definitely happen to elicit it, possibly a leaf blowing past him on the street? That kind of thing.
He’s adorable, hope you have many happy years together. ❤️

UngratefulOldCabbage · 10/06/2024 13:47

You've made the right choice - the girl will be snapped up very quickly but he knew you were the humans for him. I'm allergic to all dogs and slightly scared of most of them too but I have a special place in my heart for greyhounds. I hope you are all very happy together Smile

helpontheheys · 10/06/2024 14:31

Thank you!

Another picture just because 😍 he's already worked out the stairs, just like that!

He is an amazing dog

We've made the right choice, haven't we?
