Anyone else’s dog hate some dogs and ignores or loves others?

And how the hell do you work out which ones they’re liable to go off at so you don’t spend every walk on high alert?!

This morning - 7 dogs of varying mixes/breeds were all his best pals. Yesterday - 1 ploddy lab minding its own business and el diablo was spinning on the end of his lead 🙈

Love this thread!
Thought I was the worse owner in the world because my boy gets growly with boy dogs bigger than him so I spend my time running away from anything bigger than a spaniel! He especially doesn't like labs even though he is one!
But he loves loves girl dogs and utterly ignores anything small no matter how yappy and cross they get!
But it does put you on high alert. 🙁
My previous girl DDog loved every dog she met and never had a reaction to anything in 10 years.. I miss those carefree walks !!

Mine generally doesn't like bouncy daft puppies. I think it stems from one having a pop at her when she was younger

She also isn't enamoured by big dogs, but she's quite small herself

TBH, she's really not that interested in other dogs, loves humans - unless the other dog is a Schnauzer! Then she's all for saying hello - weirdo

I know the problem well, some days loves them all others just wants to have a go, it’s definitely worse if another dog has a go at him whilst on the walk, then he tends to be a pain with every other dog he sees

Sorry, I should have said this is when he’s on-lead. He’s always on-lead when we’re walking round the neighbourhood.

It would be so much easier if I knew it was all ploddy labs, or all black dogs, or all boxers - but no, it’s like a game of will he, won’t he.

If he's neutered he might be reactive to UN neutered males. Mine is.

First I thought he didn't like black labs, then spaniels..... finally worked out it was entire males. Another couple of dog walkers have the same problem.

Mine has two local males that he hates with a passion, sweetness and light with all other dogs.

SirChenjins · 11/06/2024 09:08

Today he barked at the neighbour’s cat, barked at the (female) cockapoo up the road that he normally loves, barked at a (female) spaniel from round the corner, and ignored a greyhound, a bulldog and a GSD. Between that and pulling on his lead the whole way round I came home feeling absolutely deflated and defeated.

Sending you hugs, some days are definitely harder than others! Is your dog intact? Just asking as I've had mine chemically castrated and he's definitely better able to control his impulsive behaviours and self regulate now than he was before so I shall be getting him ✂ before it wears off.

It wasn't something I'd previously considered as his recall is perfect and he's never aggressive, just loud but the difference since the chemical castration have totally swayed me.

SirChenjins · 11/06/2024 11:52

No, he’s neutered. We started off with a chemical castration too and then went to full neutering as he seemed fine with it.

I can barely even look at him today!

Could it be intact boys he's reacting to? Mine can sniff them out three streets away and does a great impression of a rhodesian ridgeback (hackles)

Willmafrockfit · 11/06/2024 12:56

we had a shameful trip yesterday, the ducks were tormenting ddog Blush, moved seats and they still came to find us

I don’t think he’s fussed to be honest - he’ll have a bark at all sorts. He redeemed himself on our lunchtime walk by playing beautifully with another off-lead dog we met in a field, so I can bring myself to look at him again now. We’re off to our scent work class tonight so hopefully he’ll behave himself.

One is generally indifferent or mildly friendly to adult dogs, but adores puppies. Even puppies bigger than her. She's very maternal.

The other discriminates based on breed. He likes most dogs, loves other corgis, but definitely doesn't like French bulldogs or huskies. Also there is one particular (male) collie that he's in love with.
