Spay recovery

Hi, my (just) 2 year old cocker spaniel is due to be spayed on 19th June. Her seasons are very far apart and only had her second one in March - a year after her first. However, we go on holiday August 5th and she'll be in doggy care - not kennels, but someone's house.

I'm really worried about recovery time and whether I should delay it. Obviously you can't foresee the unforeseen but do you have any experience in what the recovery time should be? They are going to try laparoscopically but she's quite small so it might not be possible or
Thanks

I think she should be fine with that timeframe. My dog had laprascopic surgery and was back to lead walks in a couple of days. Two weeks is what they normally say for a traditional spay.

Thank you - that's encouraging!

My dog had a traditional spay in December and was up and about climbing the furniture by the fourth day, out on gentle lead walks by the fifth day to stop her going stir crazy in the house. Your timeframe seems absolutely fine.

Thank you!

My dog was spayed about 5 weeks ago and she is back to normal now and is finally allowed to be off lead on walks again. I’d recommend a surgery suit instead of the cone, I don’t know if it helped her recover faster but she couldn’t get to her stitches at all so they healed almost fully by the 2 week mark.

My dog had an emergency spray due to pyometra and was groggy for a day or so. The vet said recovery might be longer due to the nature of the op and that it was emergency surgery. She was trying to run up the stairs on day 3 and had off lead walks after about 10 days. No issues at all.

** off lead walks but only walking and not running/chasing her ball etc.

That time frame will be absolutely fine unless she gets a complication such as an infection. Whilst unlikely, that can happen. If this is a once in a lifetime dream holiday then I’d defer the spay til after it. If, if the unexpected happens, you could cancel then go ahead, as the odds are it will be fine.

Reading with interest. Not to derail but can I ask: what is a traditional spay? Mentioned upthread? Just planning ahead for my own girl. Thanks

DataPup · 06/06/2024 08:01

Traditional spay is one where they remove ovaries and womb via a single larger incision. Versus a laprascopic spay where they remove the ovaries only via keyhole surgery. Although I think some places also just remove ovaries now even if not keyhole surgery.

We are in the same boat, so to speak. Our nearly 2 year old terrier was due to be spayed last week but she is having a mild phantom so we have put it off a week, and will do again if we need to. We have a camping holiday booked mid July so after that will be running tight.

When I spoke to the nurse they said 2 weeks for a full recovery but as an agility trainer we wouldn't bring a dog back to training for 5 - 6 weeks then build up.

I would say your time frames are absolutely fine.

How did it go yesterday? Don't worry about the holiday. Neutering is an easy recovery. Don't let her jump onto beds or sofas etc... for about a week and other than that just keep an eye on things when the wound / stitches start to itch.

Excitedannie · 29/06/2024 12:12

Ah thanks for asking - I cancelled it in the end - probably an over reaction but I've postponed it until I come back from holiday and can give her my full attention

Mind you - she's just giving me side eye after a rather cold hosing down outside after she rolled in fox poo so I'm considering my life choices right now Grin
