Dog detests the car, 5 years now!!!! He pants, cries, wont settle and literally pushes himself into the seat. Even a 5-10 minute journey.

We did a 3 hour holiday journey once....it was horrific, we stopped 5-6 times he was terrible. Stops us doing so much.

Is he too old now (8 years old) to get him out of this

Have you tried him in different places around the car? Loose in the boot with a guard? On the back seat with a harness and hammock thing (they don't like feeling like they are going to fall in the footwell)?

We have a dog that hates car journeys. After a bit of trial and error we found out she's fine in the boot

These are excellent for calming an anxious dog.

Make sure the dog can't see out.

Our border terrier had terrible motion sickness which would result in her panting etc, not always sick so we thought it might be anxiety. The vet gave us some travel sickness tablets for her and they were brilliant and she actually doesn't need them now.

Have you tried a crate with a sheet over the top so dog can only see out of the back.

You should give this several weeks before you see any improvement.

The only way ours will settle us with a chew that takes a few minutes.

Now she looks for the chew. Settles down with it and once she's finished goes to sleep.

When dogs are afraid of something the training is usually very slow and long. I would just feed him near the car til hes comfortable, then right next to the car, then with the car door open, then try to lure him inside the car and feed without moving etc. each steps can take several days to even weeks depending on how scared he is. And of course never actually drive him in that time. Even a short drive that terrifies him will ruin the whole training.
