Our dogs are on this and they absolutely love it though I find it makes their poops a lot softer and smellier than raw.
Just wonder if anyone else is feeding this now? Ours are supposed to be getting the full amount of food they need but I’m finding that I have to add almost a whole days worth of kibble (currently using Iams) before they’re satisfied and they still wants snacks etc inbetween. They don’t seem to be gaining weight so I think it’s ok but it seems strange that I’m having to top up so much when it’s sold as a complete diet.

My dog loves BB. He's on a fish diet. We do have to top up with a salmon superfood kibble twice a day. He doesn't get any other treats.

Devilshands · 01/06/2024 17:20

One of mine has BB. He gets a half portion of BB and half portion of biscuits. His poos are massive and, being frank, are two poo bag jobs. BUT, his coat is shiny, he's healthy and he really enjoys his food.

He always claims hunger...but dogs always will! You could feed them a months portion in a day and they'd still act as though they were starving.

DominoRules · 01/06/2024 18:14

Mine is on BB and loves it - firm poos and in great condition.

But, I have to give him double the amount they recommend and he also has a small lunch of kibble plus egg/salmon/leftovers.

FastFood · 01/06/2024 18:41

BB here too, and likewise, I give bigger portions.
I top up sometimes with kibbles, and keep feeding him raw in the morning.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I think from what you’ve said it’s safe to assume that it’s perfectly normal to need more food than they say so will keep mixing with kibble. I guess that as long as they’re happy to eat it l, and they really are, the price of picking up to 20 pops a day is just something I’ll have to put up with😄

I wish our dog was still on this as her coat looked so good people used to comment, but she went off it after a year and now only likes one certain dry food or home cooking !

NewYearTimeToChange · 01/06/2024 21:26

It smells good but i hadn’t realised how many lentils there seem to be in it. It’s only because they are pooing twice as much as they did before that I’ve really taken much notice. They love it but it’s definitely a bit rich maybe or very high in fibre. The lentils seem To come out whole😕

Personally, I think if they're pooing that often, then something in the diet isn't suiting them and I'd look at making changes.

I know a few dogs on butternut box, all need way more than stated making an already expensive food £££££. Two are also fond of eating their own poo 🤢

Mindymomo · 01/06/2024 21:50

My 6 year old dog has been on Butternut Boxes for about 2 years, poo is definitely on the softer side, but is most of the time, able to be picked up and he usually goes twice a day. I mix it with Wainwrights dry food. He was on 600g per day, but put on weight after a course of steroids for a skin infection, so I now get 500g pouches per day.

Citrusandginger · 01/06/2024 21:59

We had it for about 18 months but then changed to raw after a big price hike and one of the dog's developing runny poos.

Now getting weekly "come back to us" emails but tbh the poos are smaller with raw which makes me think butternut had a a lot of bulking agents.

NewYearTimeToChange · 01/06/2024 22:20

Yes ours used to be on raw and the poos were small and once or twice a day max but the hassle of getting them to eat was too much and so much was wasted we decided to try cooked. They are much keener but just poo so much more. Maybe we should try home cooking our own and see how that goes. Meat and veg with some rice or potato can’t be that complicated. I think I’d probably leave the lentils out though.

I home cooked for a while, once you’ve got a balanced recipe it’s good. I only stopped as it’s a lot of work unless you can cook in big batches and get a variety of protein, organ meat like heart, kidney. I used to do 70% protein, 25% veg and 5% liver, plus calcium powder added. There’s a chicken one from Butternut that contains pumpkin, do you feed that one, I find pumpkin helps firm up 💩

CadyEastman · 02/06/2024 08:03

Not sure I'd be paying that much for a food that was full of lentils. That's what I feed the family when I'm short of money and waiting for payday Grin

QueenOfToast · 02/06/2024 08:20

My dog was on BB for the first 2 years but once he started coming out of his puppy years, and was getting less treats during walks and training, the weight started to drop off him rather dramatically. I found that the BB pouches made it hard to just give him a slightly bigger portion so started adding in Wolfworthy as well. In the end I switched him to Wolfworthy totally and his weight has been perfectly stable since.

NewYearTimeToChange · 02/06/2024 08:42

Ahh yes I’d forgotten Wolfworthy, we used to use that at one point but then had to pause the subscription and never restarted. Maybe that’s better than Iams for the kibble though obviously a lot more expensive. I must admit I’d have to cook about 10kg a week if home cooked food and that does seem like a lot of effort. Honestly, my kids were easier to feed than my animals.

If he’s pooing that much and needs extra then it doesn’t sound like it’s suiting him!

Mine has a high protein working dogs dry with a small amount of high quality wet and only does two small poos a day. Dogs need high protein low carb. They also digest animal protein better. I’d be looking at something else if it were my dog.

Melsy88 · 03/06/2024 10:05

I'm no expert but if you follow any of the dog nutritionists on facebook, they all tend to say that BB is not great. Full of legumes, which are not great. Good marketing, but average/below average food! I took on board the advice and moved from BB to different dog and noticed a big difference in coat shine, and poo quality! Poos are like those from raw fed dogs now - small and firm :) And my dog loves the food (a bit too much as sometimes i get a 5am awakening to get her breakfast 😅)
