Hi All-have enjoyed reading through this thread and have learned lots. We have a 10 wk old rescue JRT/Springer pup (plus 4 kids/2 older dogs and 3 cats). She's settling well, kids are mucking in -wonder how long that'll last though. She's VERY interested in chewing destroying things. ANY things. The house has never looked so minimalist😬. Any recommendations for safe chew toys? Also-snuffly mat type things? Puzzles? She seems very food-orientated, which is useful for training. But will have a go at pretty much anything -I'm snail collecting every morning before I can let her out to the enclosed part of the garden. We are hand feeding and whistling a certain way when feeding at the minute. She already appears to understand 'sit' and 'come'-is that even possible yet? I get the feeling she's going to need a fair amount of brain-training and puzzles....she's pretty full-on!!

Kong, tough tugz and tugg-e-nuff are all long lasting

Be careful leaving puppies (and tbh I think adults too) around any sort of chewable item: they can and will eat and attempt to swallow anything. This includes (not us not limited to) whole tennis balls, concrete, wooden beams, bully sticks (yes, whole), kongs, grass, poisonous flowers, clothes etc.

Entertainment is fine, but please don’t leave them alone with them.

My sister just had to operate on a 20 week old GSD that swallowed a kong whole after being left alone with it whilst the owner WFH - the vets bill was astronomical apparently.

Anything terrier typically need tough toys. That said my working terrier who is 18 months old hasn’t destroyed anything yet! She runs around with her soft toys but doesn’t shred them. Our last dog (terrier hound) destroyed everything within seconds.

I don’t think you can go wrong with loo roll tubes and cardboard boxes tbh. Just don’t let them ingest too much. She’ll want to shred when she gets older and not chew but spaniels are carriers so you could get either!

It’s a heady mix for sure. Get yourself signed up for some good ongoing in person training. Massive terrier fan here but they are really clever and do need a job. They adore training if you make it worth their while. Mine has just been poking her weave poles to tell me she wants to go in the garden and play!

I went to the doggy toy store based on what the pup was stealing. Leather shoes- leather toy, seat belt strapping-Kong fish etc. we went through several moderately soft plastic toys. The toys also got bigger as he grew and his jaw strength improved.
i found some good ones at the dollar store.
the older dogs were a bit jealous of the new toys so sometimes I bought two.
cheap stuffies even if they only lasted 2 weeks were still worthwhile.
