Boarder Collie - what deshedding brush/comb do you use at home?

Please will you share deshedding tool recommendations. I've looked at them on Amazon and looks like a comb on a handle - is this what I need?

Dog was only at the groomers on the 9th of May and had her coat washed, deshedded and cut - so less than 3 weeks ago. Groomer can't get her back in until the last week of July!

Ours is called a furminator. Never had him groomed professionally and it keeps shedding at bay. I've never met a collie whose clipped, ddog only washes in rivers too

fieldsofbutterflies · 28/05/2024 15:09

Is there a reason why you're getting her cut?

KeenOtter · 28/05/2024 17:08

Personally I would not use a furminator on a collie.

We use a rake that pulls out all the under coat really succesfully without cutting it which is what the furminator does.

Undercoat rake and a horse mane and tail brush for the long fluffy bits. Works a treat!

Is there a reason why you're getting her cut?

Yes! She suddenly went all bushy, grew a mane and looked unkept. I don't know if it was an age thing as she didn't need groomed until she was 7, she's 9 now and has only had it done 3 times to take away the dead hair (usually old winter coat) and trim the flicking bits. She doesn't get much hair off it's mostly a deshedding appointment with a wash and dry. She's never come home looking any different she just feels lighter to touch and smells lovely

As a dog groomer I'd advise against the type of rake in the image above, I've seen a lot of inintentional damage caused to coats by rakes like that. The same goes for furminators, especially on a double coated dog like a collie. I so wish they'd stop selling the sodding things.

My all time favourite deshedding tool for double coats is actually designed for dematting, but I find the shape and design just works beautifully to pull the dead coat out as gently as possible. It seems a touch expensive but it's worth every single penny and then some:

As for a brush, you really just want a good quality slicker brush. Ancol/ Groom Professional do some reasonably priced ones.

Thank you @ToffeenutLatte I really appreciate this I'll order one now.
I hung off getting the comb as there were too many choices I couldn't tell which one was a 'good' one, but judging by your reply the answer for a collie is none....!

Can I ask please, a pp asked me why I was I was getting her groomed - should she not be visiting the groomers even as irregularly as she does? Wondering if I've made a mistake

I have a long haired border collie, loads of my friends have them too( farmers) never been to the groomers. I don't think they are a breed that needs grooming. I do give her a wash with dog shampoo using the mud daddy ( she hates the bath) if she starts to smell a bit whiffy . I do cut out a few knots with scissors as well as a light groom. My farmer friend clips her dogs on a long setting but that is because they get covered in shit on a farm. I think a lot of farmers prefer a short haired collie for this reason. My dogs tail is brilliant at spraying muck all over the walls.

@twoandcooplease
You're doing absolutely the right thing.
Obviously I'm a bit biased here but I believe the vast majority of dogs benefit from regular grooming.

I see most of my collie clients every 4-8 weeks depending on coat density and lifestyle.
Not a single one has suffered any ill-effect from being groomed and many who came to me never having been groomed before and suffering with skin irritation have improved dramatically by having the dead hair and dander properly removed.

A little trim of straggly bits to stop them getting dry and splitting won't do any harm, either. Far better than leaving it to grow and having a dog with bushy knickers and grinch feet.
Full body clipping of double coats is a contentious issue and one I could happily discuss for hours but I get the impression that's not what you're having done so I'll save that debate for another thread!

@Ratatouille1 Our ddog is short haired maybe that makes a difference?

This is a photo of her before and after her cut
There's not much difference to see (she looks a wee bit tidier) but to touch her there's no loose hairs coming away anymore iykwim

She's lovely and looks very nicely groomed!

KeenOtter · 29/05/2024 19:12

Collie owner and never had my collie groomed at a groomers.

They are brushed regularly. I do this frequently as I like to check them over daily for any changes, ticks etc.

I never cut my collies either. OP your collie looks like she has had quite a big cut on her feathers?

You could uite easily keep her groomed yourself if you wanted to but totally your choice to send her to the groomers if she likes it. However there is no need for her general well being or health.

I use a brush similar to this on Rake brush. I would not use one that cuts the hair as the one you linked to does.
