Cockapoo leg raw from licking

Vitriolinsanity · 25/05/2024 14:50

Hi, my 2 yo Cockapoo has licked a patch on his lower leg raw.

What can I use to soothe the skin and keep him from licking it whilst it has time to work please?

You can give them anti histamines

You need to work out why he is licking. A cone will help in the short term but will not guarantee he won’t do it again. With our cat it was stress related.

I would put a cone on him to stop the licking but really you need to work out why he's doing it - allergies are common with poodle mixes.

Comes are awful. Try an inflatable doughnut instead as they can eat and drink easier with that on.

This is very good and inexpensive.

Donuts don't always stop them reaching their legs though.

I would always take a cone off for eating, drinking, toilet breaks and walks anyway.

You can get fantastic sleeves for them to wear to break the cycle and let the skin heal. Suitical make them for example.

I give my dog a piriton (antihistamine) every day from about mid March to October as he is allergic to something in the long grass and I'm not going to keep him off grass. If he's a bit scratchy i might put one in his dinner too. Not all brands are safe for dogs so google first if giving anything other than piriton

Vitriolinsanity · 26/05/2024 15:28

He has a hot spot for which the vet has given antibiotics. The recommendation to use Piriton was advised as they too think he's got allergies from walks in long grass.

Thank you lovely posters.

Is it just his front legs? My cavapoo does the same but never his back legs, which I’m struggling to understand. He pulls at his fur but it seems more prevalent in the eve. I’ve excluded chicken from his diet to see if that makes a difference. It hasn’t as yet.

You get doughnut cone combos btw, mine couldn’t get to his paw with it and he has pretty long legs, but seemed to find it much better to wear than a cone

I always feel like a bot selling stuff when I recommend things 😂 promise I’m not, if that helps 🤷‍♀️

Use a leg sleeve to keep doggie away from the leg. But if it is an allergy or food intollerance or if it is a habit, anxiety or boredom don't be surprised if your dog transfers the behaviour to another part of their body. If they do that you will need to work out if it is an allergy or if it is behavioural.
